This gets old after awhile...
What, exactly, is -so- wrong with using a light?
It'll reduce humidity? Ok then, he just needs to be aware of that and compensate for it.
Honestly, if he can maintain the correct environment while using a light, let him.
Telling someone "DON'T USE A LIGHT" is akin to telling them "DON'T USE ASPEN SUBSTRATE". I think it's more personal preference than anything. Not like the light by itself will kill the snake.
BTW, it is quite possible to keep a high-humidity animal with a heat lamp. I have an amazon tree boa (which needs higher humidity than a ball python) in a 40 tall tank, with a screen top, and a lamp for heat. She has perfect sheds. Just takes some modifications (I covered up some of the screen, and I have a humidifier on a timer, pumping mist into the tank 4x a day for about 6 minutes) I don't even have to mist anymore (no more ugly water spots). Works fine. If you have a problem with it, tell me how well a heat pad works with an aboreal animal and 3" of substrate the snake doesn't go under.

i use a red bulb myself, all i have is wood heat so the back rooms stay cold , the bulbs work real well and the color is less intense then a white bulb blasting out. just start small and just use it at night and place it so the snake can move away if he wants
.
I haven't used red light on snakes, but I do on my monitors. They seems to work well for providing heat at night. I use regular heat bulbs for the monitors during the day. I prefer heat tape for snakes run under the enclosure.
