Mongolian pit viper

typpy Aug 15, 2008 09:06 PM

Hi all,

I saw this little pit viper, about two feet long, in Hustai NP (near Ulaanbaatar) in Mongolia. I can't find any information on Mongolian snakes. Does anyone have a common and/or scientific name for this guy?

Thanks,

Melanie

That looks like Gloydius (Agkistrodon) halys.

I'm thinking along the same lines as "chrish", but think it is probably an "Amur Viper"(Gloydius(Agkistrodon)intermedius saxitilis).

It's Gloydius halys - intermedius/saxatilis does not occur in Mongolia.

Cheers,
