How many breeders do I need?

wonzzer Aug 16, 2008 05:45 PM

Hello, I built my first rodent rack, thanx to Clay Davenport.
I have 17 ball pythons and 1 green tree python. I started out with 1 male and 5 females. How many do I need? I would like to feed every 4 days. Also I haven't seen any monkey business going on yet between my male and females yet. How big does my male have to be for him to start breeding???

Thanx for your input.
Justin

your male would need to be around 3-4 months at least. 17 balls i would guess your going to need about 10 females. i have 4 and keep around 8 females but always have extra to sell. good luck!

feeding every 4 days? Unless all your snakes are yearlings or younger that is a very heavy feeding schedule. For most snakes other than those with high metabolism (most garter snakes, racers and the like) even for hatchlings feeding every 5-7 days is fine. Adults are better on a schedule of once every 10-20 days.

Over feeding adult snakes just leads to obesity and related complications. Unless you are not feeding big enough prey size in which case you just need to increase the size of the prey or double up smaller sized prey.

I personally find colonies work best when its one male to 2-4 females. If your tubs are small, one male two females is best.

Depending on how old your current group is, it may take 1-4 months before the first litter is born.
