South Carolina (Mrytle Beach) Herping

captaincaiman Aug 16, 2008 05:55 PM

I will be in South carolina with family at Mrytle beach in Sept, and was wondering if anyone knows what kind of snakes (if Any) can be found in that general area. Also, are there scorpions or tarantulas as well. Thank you for any info.

welcome to the land of the 3 r's;rat snakes(yellows, greens, maybe blacks and corns),racers(blackof curse),and rattlers(canebrake/timber,pygmy if you're really lucky).throw in a couple water snakes, maybe a copperhead, water moccasin,or hognose,if you are extremely lucky, you'll find a chain king.the only place you'll see tarantulas or scorpions is at alligator adventure, next to the house of blues.

Wow! that's a lot of snakes. Now is that the myrtle beach area, or carolina as a whole? Oh, By the way, Thank You for the response.

that list pretty much encompasses the whole atlantic coast of sc.the last time that i was in myrtle beach was 3 yrs ago,and the only snakes i found were scattered around the roughly 37,000
golf courses that developers just"had"to build.anymore, there just really isn't a whole lot of undeveloped land left within 15 or 20 miles in any direction from myrtle beach.if youwant some real good herping,go past myrtle beach(stay on us 17,so you won't get lost)about an hour or so.some of the land is national park, some of it is used for growing pulpwood pines, and some is farmland, and as long as you ask the farmers permission, they have no problem letting you "prospect"around.man,it's a great rush to look in a hay barn and find a nice corn or almost 7'greenish rat(they call them chicken snakes around here).anyway, good luck!

Thanks for the info. I'm real excited about the trip. I haven't seen the beach in 30 years. now if I can only talk my brother into taking me to that state park. my family thinks I'm a little odd with my reptile hobby.

Tell your family this odd reptile hobby keeps you out of trouble.

Yeah I know what you mean. People nowadays tend to have bad habbits if they don't involve themselves in some sort of hobby.
