Angolan night shift operator attacked by boid. What type is it?

cpn_aaron Sep 04, 2003 03:42 PM

Hey everyone,
My folks work in Nigeria; therefore, they have friends all over the continent with bizarre stories to tell.
Recently a night shift operator in Angola was asleep on the job at the refinery and this bad boy came up from the nearby jungle and proceeded to bite and constrict the man around his waist. He woke up and screamed until the security came. Unfortunately they shot the snake (the blood on the operator is from the snake).
My question is...what sort of snake would you guess it was? My flat mate and I are a little stumped and I don't know much about West African boids. Best I can tell you for local is the snake was found on the south western coast of Angola. Just thought I'd share a little story from the Dark Continent.

Hi there,

well, actually there is only one lage boid in Africa. This is a python named African rock python (Python sebae sebae or the neighbor species Python nataliensis (former a subspecies of the Python sebae sebae). This picture sure looks like one of these but I can't exactly tell which one it is as I am not really into african pythons.

Cheers,
Wulf

There are only two python species in Angola. The dwarf python, Python anchietae, and the southern African python (AKA lesser African python), Python natalensis.

The snake in the picture is a natalensis. I'll bet that guy was pretty freaked when he woke up with that snake wrapped around him. The snake isn't big enough to eat that man by a long ways, but he's plenty big enough to give a fellow a fight for his life if the snake got the jump on him. Both of the large African python species are extreme predators, surprisingly strong and tough--they make Burmese look like weenies.
