Is this an Applegate Albino SD Gopher?

KenRoshak Aug 16, 2008 08:53 PM

Last year I bred my Applegate Albino SD Gopher to a Snow SD Gopher. I would have expected all albinos but out of 4 good eggs I hatched 2 albinos and 2 normals. Does this mean the Snow was a "different" type of albino? The pic is one of the albino babies. Notice all the red on the pattern where I would normally expect to see white blotches. I also posted mom, dad and normal sibling below.

I'd say it is probably one albino het for applegate. The baby and mother look applegate to me, but you can't really tell on the snow. I've also heard of a weird gene with applegates causing normals to be produced from two albino parents (although I don't think I've heard 50%, it was much lower than that, usually talking two normals over several years of breeding).

Thanks Nick. Yeah, I guess I'll know better when I breed an albino baby back to the dad.

When you breed a baby normal back to dad your results will be pretty much the same. What you have is a snow or purple blotched albino thats het for the applegate strain. So you were actually breeding het to albino.Your male snow is simply het for the other strain.
Anyway, the "normal" baby you have is 100% triple het. its 100% for applegate albino, purple blotched albino and anery.
So, when you breed the triple het back to dad you will probably produce some snows and both types of albinos and maybe a few normals and they will be 100% het for purple blotched albino, anery and 66% het for applegate albino.

I was the one refered to as producing normal babies out of pure applegates.I produced about 10% over 7 or 8 years.Pretty weird.LOL...

I appreciate the feedback on the dad and babies, that helps a lot Shannon! And I do remember your posts on the normals from albino pairing. That is weird.
