nerve damage

jay67 Sep 04, 2003 04:01 PM

Hi,
I have a pair of butterfly agamas and about three months ago the male fell in his enclosure and fractured his pelvice i used metacalm for the pain and kept him resticted to a smaller space where he could not climb to give the fractures time to heal all seemed well and after six weeks he was well enough to go back in the main enclosure.Last month i noticed a lump on his pelvice so off to the vet we went again. The vet says there has been nerve damage to the area from the fall and to resrict his movements by placing him in the smaller enclosure again give him pain killers and wait and see. It's now been three weeks and i don't see any improvement in him does anyone have any experiance with this sort of injury.I really don't want have to have him put to sleep but my vet can't give me any answers as to a time frame and it's not fair to put him through this forever.Any remarks would be helpfull.

Cheers
John

The most difficult task is to determine how much pain is still occuring with the agama. Reptiles with bone fractures take more time to heal than mammals. An x-ray will show if there is any progress in the fracture healing. Your vet should be able to help you make a decision; if the fracture is healing, pain will subside with time. If the fracture is not healing, then euthanasia may be the humane thing to do.
