is my baby not eating for a reason?

trex8692 Aug 17, 2008 11:33 AM

I got this little baby at 4 1/2 inches from lllreptile on aug 14, 2008

and on that day i fed it 8 mealworms. i thought i was overfeeding but i thought that reptiles would have an "im full" resonse. i guess not? . aug 14

well the next day he regurgitated 5 of them and if my math is correct that means he correctly digested 3. i learned to feed 2 or so mealworms after that. aug 15

so on the day after regurgitation i tried to feed again but to no avail. aug 16

still not eating. my primary reasoning is that its still full but that seems kind of unlikely now with him having only 2 mealies in its stomach. aug 17.

Based on my timeline, what would you guys think is happening?

(i heard UTH's help digestion and i have that on right now)

A baby regurgitating doesn't sound good.

Be safe. Just in case your leo came from an overcrowded tank in unsannitary conditions, take him to be checked for pinworms. Collect a poopi sample. If he is infected, he will die if untreated. Adults handle the infection of pinworms far better showing anorexia but the younglings don't do well at all. If you just keep giving him time and waiting days, he will only worsen.

I learned the hard way years ago when I delayed taking one of mine I bought in a show, in for treatment. She was so young, she did not survive it and could not poop out the dead pinwormf after treatment. forcefeeding didn't help wither. She was too weak by the infection and died. The reptilian vet confirmed it came from the breeder's unsannitary and overcrowded tanks.

Fortunately, it only takes a couple treatments of a solution fed with a syringe to treat the animal... Just play it safe. Good luck

i thought it was just because the baby had ate too much.

but ok i will look at the feces and see if i can collect them.

a question though: leo feces are supposed to be pelleted? with some moisture right?

thast exactly what my leo ejects.

if the leo starts eating again, willl all be better?

sry i forgot to ask:

how exactly do i get a stool sample without contaminating it??

and should i bring my animal to the hospital?

Well yea leo poo is usually an oblong oval shape and its going to be moist if you get to it in time. As far as collecting it goes i usually just get a zip-lock bag and just kinda scoop it up, if you aren't going to the vet that day you can put it in the refridgerator, but usually only over night, any longer than that and its no good. If it were me i would bring the leo in with you just so the vet can give it a look over and see if theres anything else wrong with it that you dont notice.

I agree.

Plus, I've even had mine squeeze a fresh poopi out, for collection.
DON'T TRY THIS OR LISTEN TO ANYONE ON HOW TO DO IT!!!!

Please have a poopi sample checked for pinworms TODAY. Babies don't last long with an infection, and die a very slow, dehydrating and anorexic death.

Good luck

I meant, the doc squeezed the poopi out for collection. Not me

I've watched Nyu produce a fresh one for me. Not something I needed to see though. :P

Don't collect the poo, it isn't worth it.

Take your little guy to a herp vet ASAP... see if you have a local herp society and see who they recommend. (We tried calling the university's vet school and got a horrible recommendation years ago.)

The procedure is simple, a small q-tip like sampler is gently inserted and the sample is viewed and tested for parasites. Time is of the essence, I think many of us had stories of thinking we caught our first infection soon enough and then had to make the heart breaking decision to put the little one down.

In short, don't bother trying to collect your own, take the guy to the vet as stress free as possible and have him tested that way. You're much less likely to miss something.

Good luck, we are pulling for you. Keep us updated, you said you got the guy from LL, where did you get the worms? Always good to have a community heads up if parasites are roaming around.

crazy herp vets are closed for some stupid event or something or other

i dont think the animal has worms but ill probably go see the vet anyways.

i think the culprit in this story is me because i fed the baby like 8 1 inch-long mealworms.. (8 mealies not 8 inches long) and i think he got too full. After i added a heat pad (didnt plug it in) (stupid me), it seemed to digest the worms fine and started to eat again within the next few days and is still eating as of today.

i learned my lesson, im feeding it 1 inch mealworms every 12 hours

is that good/bad?
