Pink bellied pastel

kingofspades Aug 17, 2008 03:42 PM

Ok, so I am no novice, and I know snakes develop pink bellies when they are about to shed...
but one of my baby pastels has a pink belly ALL THE TIME.
It's not a burn or anything. Her belly is just pink.
Her sister's belly is a little pink, but nowhere near as deep pink as hers.

Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it might be something genetic.
The female was given to me for free from an old room mate. (The mom).

Hey, its weird that you posted that, because I hatched out two pastel males from breeding my pastel male to a nice very light colored normal female! I also had a pinkish colored belly on one of the males. The female was also breed by my buddys lesser male and the male pastel with the pinkish belly looks just like the lessers belly. Pinkish and clear like!!! I was woundering if the pastel got some of the lessers genes in him. He also has the fading on the sides like the lesser but has the pastel pattern. He also has alot of blushing on the sides and on his back. The other pastel male has the normal white looking belly like the dad and his half sister. I can't explain it, but I can only hang on to him and breed him to see if it proves anything out. I'll post some pics of him and his brother to show the difference of their bellys and blushing. I'll also post pics of him and a lesser to show the similarities of their bellys. THANKS, BOB

I'll try to take some pics to post, but the flash kinda drowns the pink out.

As far as I know, mom is a normal...

Pink bellies can develop from a number of things other than shedding or burns.

Generally, the pink discoloration is the result of some form of irritation.

What type of substrate are you using? How moist is the substrate? I've noticed with some of my snakes in the past that if the substrate is wet they will develop a pink belly. When I've noticed this I usually move the snake to a new, drier tub and open their old (wet) tub up to dry out. With the decreased humidity the pink belly usually clears up within a day or two.

She does keep spilling her water dish...pretty much daily...

Thanks.
