Blizzard F + Black M results?+ other ?s

Lostsorrow Aug 17, 2008 09:59 PM

Hi all,
I am new to the forums and y'all sem to know extensivly how to predict what clutches of eggs will come out to look like so I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I recently aquired my first kingsnake which I was told is called a Blizzard phaze California Kingsnake. She is absolutly beautiful and eats like a horse. Is it normal for her to eat 3 mice at a feeding and still want more? The mice are about 4 inches long not including the tail. She just shead intact and the length of it was 48 inches long. I am so happy with her that I saw at the show when I got her an all black paternless kingsnake as well. Could someone please give me the name of this phase please? If I were to mate all all black male with her what would the clutch look like? Sorry if I am asking so many questions but I really want to learn more about the species and such.

Thanks for your time.

Sounds like you have a mexican Black Kingsnake.

Which is not the same as A blizzard California Kingsnake.

Their have been huge debates over this cross... some say it's ok, other say it's a no no.

If you were to breed them together they'd probably look like sockhead calikings.

The hatchlings would be 2x het Hypermelanistic and Albino.

The link does not seem to work

The traits that make up blizzard are recessive, which means when bred to a normal snake, they would not show up in the offspring.
Mexican Black Kings and California Kings are different subspecies, so you'd be making normal looking intergrades which would be het for blizzard traits.

They may or may not be normal looking.
It is possible that the hyper in Cal Kings is to some extent compatible with the hyper in MBK.

The hyper in MBK is clearly different and does not seem to be simple Mendel genetics, but it is possible that it does or can involve a gene compat. with Cal King hyper, and there may be more than on Cal King hyper gene because some hyper Cal Kings have a pattern mutation going as well (Davis/Mendota) while some hyper Cal Kings do not (LA county).

I can't wait for the Hubbs book.

Someone should donate or loan a sexually mature Davis Hyper to Shannon to pair with his clovis black belly male and see if maybe the black belly and the hyper black belly are related or allelic.

Note to OP - the following are Cal King x MBK that I produced this year - all have sock heads, and while you can see the Cal King influence, they also look to have splendida like influence.

In 2 to 3 years (I'm guessing 2, these guys are feeding well and growing FAST) - I will hopefully pair my male blizzard cal king with my female holdback from the cross - which should produce amels het for hyper and double hets that are 3/4 cal king, 1/4 mbk. (these crosses are het amel). However, I won't list them as het hyper because if hypermelanism expresses itself in a future generation, there really is no way to know for sure if it is hyper from Cal King gene or hyper from the MBK influence.

In my cross - all 11 babies produced look somewhat similar, but another person who did the cross this year got two different phenotypes - some look similar to mine, and some are not nearly as dark and don't have sock heads. So MBK x Cal King does not necessarily mean sock head.

I have a suspicion that there may be different "flavors" of MBK and that can't be visually distinguished - some with more hypermenalism causing genes than others, but even those with less hypermelanism genes still appear fully black as adults.

Res,
I have some adult Davis and Mendotas and down the road I will test the lines but I am sure they are the same. The Davis and Mendotas have already been bred together as well as the conjuncta and natida and they are all the same as far as the hyper and as far as the black bellies are concerned.
Now, the pattern aberrancies vary from animal to animal and its pretty rare to find one that has a pure black belly and is totally aberrant and is hyper as well.I was lucky enough to find one this spring but I havn't posted it before.

Now, I have no idea about the MBK and I don't think its a hyper I think its a melanistic gene so I am sure you would get all normals instead of hypers het amel if bred to a blizzard.

I dont have a male yet. I was looking towards getting a mexican black kingsnake to do this. I have the female blizzard as pictured in my previous post. I didn't know how the genetics paned out if I were to breed the two together.

I don't think that the MBK is a hypermelanistic like the animal that makes up the blizzard. The Blizzard is a combo of hypermelanistic (either Davis,Mendota or Conjuncta)and albino and the snake is all cal king.
I believe that the MBK is a melanistic version of splendida and although its still getula many people would frown on this cross.
To each his own and they are all dead to nature anyway and they are all headed for the deli cup then the shoe box but whats the point in this?
At this point we are able to at least say what the genetic makeup is on the Blizzards etc...With breedings like this we really wouldn't know down the road as they would enter the hobby in one way or another and there lineage get lost along the way.

Anyway, I am sure that if you did this breeding you would end up with a whole clutch of dark looking snakes that are het for amel and hypermelanistic.Thats really all you could say.Or just call them hybrids cause they are all the same regardless once you label them hybrids it doesn't matter what they are.
