Those are two of the finest rattlesnake pictures I have ever seen - very nice! What camera/equipment do you use? I'm looking at replacing my old clunker and would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

WOW, Rob...thank you very much! That's quite a compliment.
I used my "old clunker" too, a Nikon D100. I've been threatening to upgrade to a D300 for several months now.
The D100 produces very nice images when the lighting is good, but performance and AF fall off when the lighting is not so good. The D300 would remedy that. Lighting was a little "iffy" for these shots and the AF wasn't working very well so I had to manually focus.
The lens is a Nikkor 70-200mm VR f/2.8, an outstanding lens. Using the VR on the lens allowed me to shoot hand held while slowing my shutter speed to 1/13s to get that blurred movement in the rattle, while keeping the rest of the snake in focus.
