Too much humidity?

laurarfl Aug 18, 2008 07:59 AM

Well, I used the hygrometer the correct way....Thanks, Mike!

So last night, I had just cleaned the Burm cage, and placed the hygrometer in there anyway to check everything out. It just read 'HI', and dropped down to 82 when I opened the door and took it out. Can I have too much humidity? Perhaps I need to open some vents back up and increase ventilation?

"Well, there's your problem!"

Ha! Ha! Sorry, couldn't resist, Laura. I can just hear the girls sayin' it.

Too much humidity can be just as bad as too little. I usually shoot for 60 - 65%. I feel that gives a lil' leeway in both directions. The closer to 65% the better, in my humble opinion.

Actually, I would consider it a good, although unintended, test/experiment. This is for the albino you rescued, right? The one with frequent urinating? I'm curious to know if its urinating habits changed any under the high humidity. And whether or not it continued to drink large amounts of water.

Also, if I remember right, didn't you say it usually shed in pieces? Did it shed in the high humidity environment? Any difference?

You may find that it may fair a tad better with slightly higher humidity, say..., around 70%, and still be relatively safe from bacterial issues. I say that due to the conditions it was kept in before you got it.

Oh, one more thing - now's a good time to try Kelly's hygrometer test. I've been meaning to, just haven't gotten around to it, yet.

Hang in there!
Mike

I haven't calibrated the hygrometer yet. Yes, shed was much better last time. I saw him with his head in the water twice today already. Urination is about the same. I opened the vents and humidity dropped to 88%. We have the tropical storm blowing through my front door today. That humid air is just being driven through the cracks and my whole house feels moist and humid. YUK! I'll have to check everything in a few days when it all blows away.

I forgot to say - I would open up more vents, a little at a time, and give the hygrometer a chance to adjust the reading. That way you won't have to go back and cover any up again if the humidity suddenly drops too low.

Later!
