Mex Mex Holdback

mheidka Aug 19, 2008 04:10 AM

I have this one Mex mex female that hatched out last month that is really interesting looking. She "had me from hello", so to speak. She wouldn't stay still for any of my photo attempts...so forgive the fuzzy heads.

Maria, that's a very nice looking animal. I can see why you fell for her. Her tripartite head pattern looks like many I have seen in thayeri, which is consistent with the notion that all mexicana diverged from common ancestral stock not all that long ago, in an evolutionary sense. Good luck with her!

Thanks, Tom.

I agree about the tripartite head pattern resembling leonis. It's also interesting how little divergence from this head pattern occurs in mex mex...at least from what I've seen but I very well could be wrong .

You probably wouldn't want her, you can send her to me, no problem. Nice snake.

Wow Maria! Is that female from the granite mex mex line? Awesome blotching and side pattern. Except for the colors it's very unique and almost knoblochi-like. Can you show pics of the parents? Definitely a keeper.

Thanks, Jonel!

No, she is not from the granite line, which is why I was pretty shocked to see her. Her parents are from Tony Mangini lines and are pictured below; male first. I was really shocked at the amount of speckling on her, not only laterally, but within the nuchal and saddles. I also like that her nuchal doesn't have a black border. It kind of looks like someone took an eraser to her red portions and found speckles underneath .

I have a sibling sister to the dam that will go next year. She has much more squared off dorsal saddles like this hatchling, so the genetics are in there. I've also seen some of Tony's other mex mex progeny that have some lateral speckling, but still not quite to this degree.

Jonel,

This is probably the female you were thinking of. She (and her brother) are still small and I won't plan on breeding her until 2010.

Very nice! It looks like you have an very nice group of animals that you will be working with in the next few years. I'm looking forward on what will be produced from these lines in the future. Man, isn't selective breeding awesome!? Talk to you later.

Jonel and Maria,
I always thought selective propagation was the key to many 'new' looks in the mexicana group just as Jonel mentioned. I would venture to say that if you keep breeding the splitbanded, busy patterened Mexmex you will evenetually end up with a 'granite' type Mexmex. I would love to see more splitbanded dark phased Mexmex as well as a granite dark phase........

I love the split bands also.I am very surprised that there aren't more in the hobby cause these things have been around for a good 15 years or so.

Anyway, this is the second time I have posted this and I hope this one doesn't get pulled.

Both are very beautiful. Did they come from the Barker or Bell lines?

I agree with Jonel....'very knoblochi-like'.
Is it from the 'granite' line?

mheidka Aug 19, 2008 11:40 PM

Hi John,

No, she's not. Check the response above from Jonel's post.

I know you have had some killer mex mex in the past and there's a lot of variability within these genes. Maybe you could post some of your past beauties again
