HELP!!!!

Abeercan01 Aug 20, 2008 08:46 AM

I came home from work this morning and my female copperhead was giving birth. There were three embryotic(sp?) sacks in the cage with her and the babies were moving a little bit in the sacks but to me they don't look all the way developed. Is there anything I can do at all???
Thanks for any advice

Depends what they actually look like, of course, but they could be perfectly normal. They will look really weird in the sac, and they are. They might have stuff hanging out that looks like their “guts”, it is umbilical embryonic stuff. I’m so scientific…After they emerge and start breathing and drying off they will look a lot more normal, and won’t even look right until their first shed sometimes. The fact that they are moving is a good sign. You have a really good opportunity to get some neat pictures, you should really consider trying to capture some of that stuff. Good luck.

well the first one was barely developed. I accidentally busted open the sac and you could barely make out where the pattern was starti g to form. The snake was almost completly clear and I could see its heart beating very faintly. There was no way it could have survived, it was way too under developed. But I have taken tons of pictures. I still have some hope cause the third one looks way more de eloped then the first one and I can tell she has more in her. I hope at least one will survive. Sorry for all the run on I'm tired as hell I been at work all night. How long do they stay in the sac before they bust out?

well there was 3 not fully developed babies. I had been at work all night and I was tired so I decided to go to bed and I was hoping that when I woke up there would be at least one developed baby. Before I went to sleep, I could tell that she was having trouble Layin the fourth. I woke up, looked in the cage and there were still no more babies and she was dead. I don't understand it. She was a totally healthy snake. Any ideas on why this happened???

Sorry to hear about the death of the snake.

I was a little worried about her mid-section from some of your photos. Does she still seem very thick in the center, like there's still a lump there?
Let me know if you noticed that still and I'll go on from there. Dont wanna throw a bunch of speculation out prematurely.

To me it looked as if there were still a few babies In her. She was still a little plump but further down. I could tell when I got home this morning she was still trying to push another one out. I just wonder if her death had something to do with complications from birth??? Up until she died she seemed like a perfectly healthy snake.
I have tons of pictures on the not fully developed babies I'll try to post as soon as I can.
Thanks for any insight y'all can give me in the death of this snake.

here is a picture of one of the babies outside of the sac. if you look really close you can the hourglass patterns starting to form on the body. the eyes were fully developed and the scales were starting to develop. i think if she would have had them about 2 or 3 weeks later they would have been alright. sad..sad..sad..
I could see the heart beating through the clear body and it broke my heart knowing that it was still alive and there was nothing i could do. if only they were born a few weeks later...

Sorry to hear that man. I was looking forward to seeing the pics when they were born. Didn't expect that to happen. Of course, neither did you. I feel for ya. I'd be bummed.

staticx Aug 23, 2008 08:02 PM

did you peserve the babies in jars or were you too sad.
sorry for the loss, especially if you were really siked about it

Abeercan01 Aug 24, 2008 03:02 PM

I didn't think about preserving any of them I just threw them out in the cow pasture. It does really suck and I was really excited about it but I know these things happen and there is nothing anyone can do about it
