I came home from vacation to find...

aanata1 Aug 20, 2008 10:07 AM

My little het blood BCI had escaped. I left my snakes in the care of my boyfriend and the first thing out of his mouth when he picked me up from the airport is... "I lost one of your snakes!" Apparently, he even took the day off work to look for him and had looked for 11 hours. I of course was a mix of sad and irate. He was up all last night looking more, but no luck.

I am starting to accumulate quite a good number of snakes, and some are part of the breeding colony, but some are just special little guys... this was one of the latter. He's the only het blood I have that doesn't have my immenant demise in mind when he's out.

The kicker is... I had just bought a couple of '04 poss het blood females to breed to him this season! I am so upset... it makes me want to never leave my babies again!

I'm so sorry! I hope you find him!

The only time I really worry about my snakes is when I go away on vacation and leave someone else in charge of them (no matter how good-willed they are, other people just don't take as good a care of my snakey-guys).

KEEP LOOKING!!!!

They usually do not stray far focus efforts near the actual cage.

Water being the primary need, you can place water dishes around perimeter walls.

Bathrooms - under sink cabinet (some have a gap allowing a snake to get up and under cabinet), behind toilet

bedrooms - behind drawers (both between deresser and walls and actually pulling out drawers) Box springs if there is a hole in the under cover

In fridge mechanicals (underneath and behind)

I've heard you can sprinkle flour at varous spots to see if he passes by.

Stacking up empty soda cans along walls as an alarm if he passes by in the middle of the night

there are some good ideas there i really like the soda can one and the flower one.

here is something i though of and this is just a "theory" of a way to possibly make a snake trap. if it came down to it this might help if you were not around to hear the soda can alarm

lets say you use one of those big rubbermaid tubs with a latched lid. what i am thinking cut a hole or two and put a water dish in there along with a rat. now the idea is to cut the hole a tad smaller than the snake or a bit smaller than the rat, and in theory said snake enters tub, consumes prey and is to big to exit... then again with a full belly water and maybe even a warm spot why would he even want to lol right?

so again that is just a theory. i think years ago i say a sho on the DSC channel where a village in south america did that, they set a pig surrounded by posts that where set just the right distance apart. i remember thinking to myself if that would really work, and the more i think about it the more i think it could...

-- something for the wifey... my list got to big...

Not a bad idea but one flaw needs to be worked out, the rat would chew on the exposed edge of plastic, would have to make the opening out of steel or some other material a rat could not chew and enlarge.

Unless you're talking frozen thawed?

I don't see why it'd have to be live - the snake is going to smell it and come investigate either way, right?

Another trap idea I've heard about was to tie a long thread around a frozen/thawed prey item and the other end around a heavy item (such as furniture) in the room where you think the snake is. The snake feeds on the prey but can't escape because the thread keeps it tied to the area. The thread can be cut when you find the snake and the small amount of thread left inside will supposedly be extruded with the feces.

Wouldn't there be some risk of the thread cutting into the corner of their mouth as they try to get away and/or wrapping around them in a potentially hazardous manner if they were to panic and start thrashing or something?

If a snake really thrashed, I'd expect the thread to break.
But I have to admit, I've never tried this method, I have just read about it.

especially places you wouldn't think of.

The broiler, and in between clean stacked towels have been the favorite hiding places in my house multiple times. (fixed the cage problem now, though!).

I even once found a baby corn snake in my piggy bank once.

bathroom anyway. We found him, in the crawl space under the house after searching for 30 some odd hours (we took days off work even). We decided there was no way whatsoever he could be in the house, so my boyfriend went under the crawl space to root around and see if he could see him. Sure enough there was a little snake face sticking out of the concrete slab next to a pipe that went back into our bathroom. (half the house is on a crawl space and half is on a concrete slab because of an addition.) Anyway, there was no way we could reach even a bit of him so... several hours later...

First we cut a hole in the wall and floor to see if we could reach him

Then he fled back into the concrete along the pipe, so we got out the sledge hammer (of course taking caution to not hammer over him) and yes that is our gorgeous bathroom vanity that got annihilated.

And Finally the corner we backed him into where he was actually discovered

I guess this proves it... if you're dedicated enough, you can find any snake, you just may have to destroy your house to do it. And like I said, we did want to remodel our bathroom, just not for another few years

Oh and I have to add: YAY WE FOUND HIM!!

Too Funny... I love it. It really is PRICELESS! I told him now he needs to be a mega stud so that he can pay for the repairs!! But in all honesty, no matter the cost, I feel responsible for all of their well beings and will fight very hard for my kids!!

If he's willing to help bust up that much concrete to help get your snake back, he definitely deserves a break on this one! Glad to see you found him!

Yea, for sure. I'm not mad as much as I'd like to say I learned from my mistakes, and my mistakes were leaving the snakes in his care
