Question about Dwarf Burms

Jess Jones Aug 20, 2008 10:24 PM

I have a Burm I bought 3 years ago from a guy that got it in Floridia from am importer he said. Who I'm not sure. My question is could I have a dwarf and how can I tell for sure? As I said I've had it for 3 years and I feed it 3-5 baby chicks every 2 weeks. Now I have Retics and other Burms on the same feeding and they are growing hugh but this Burm is about 4 - 41/2 feet long. Is it possible that I have a Dwarf. It's cage is 6'x3'x2' if that helps.

I'm not up on all the particulars of dwarf Burmese pythons so I can't tell you if there are any distinguishing characteristics or not.

Personally, I think it's possible, but not very likely, that you have a dwarf, considering everything you said in your first post. If it came from an importer the odds are that it would've been labeled as one (higher value). Another thing, I don't think there's that much of a difference between a full-grown dwarf and a full-grown normal Burmese. I'm talking about the difference in the size of your Burmese and the typical size of either one of the two types at the same age and typical feeding regimen.

Your snake's size is dependent upon it's genetics & personal metabolism, the latter of which is largely controlled by you - mainly your feeding regimen & caging temperatures. There's an old wives' tale that a snake (or reptile) will only get as big as its cage allows. That's entirely false.

Unless the chicks you're feeding it are a few months old, at least, I don't believe it's getting near enough food. Is there a special reason you're feeding your snakes baby chicks instead of rodents?

Look through the several pages of threads here in this forum for other "dwarf" threads. I think there's one or two threads within the 4 or 5 pages that talk about dwarf characteristics.

Take care!

Can you post a picture of your burm. There is a difference in the pattern of a dwarf, but it's hard to explain. I doubt it's a dwarf unless you paid well over $1000 for it. There are only a few people that have imported them and they wouldn't let one go cheap, but anything is possible.

A couple of baby chicks every 2 weeks isn't enough for a 4 1/2ft burm. We have a few half dwarf burms that are a little over a year old and about 4 1/2ft. They are eating medium to large rats every 7 to 10 days. We also have a male dwarf that was imported as an adult (he's the daddy to the half dwarfs), he eats XL rats. We have had him for 2 years and he's only 5 1/2ft and hasn't grown any since we got him.

I will get a pic posted of it. When I posted about feeding I messed up on the time. It is every other week. The chicks are only a few days old when I get them. The closest pet shop around here doesn't like to sell me mice and rats because I have venomous and they don't approve. I do however get mice from time to time and also feed them to the smaller snakes. I always switch my snakes over to rabbits as soon as possible because they are easier to get. I honestly didn't think I had a dwarf but just wondered why it hasn't grown at all. My 07 Retic are growing like crazy and have well over tripled from when I got them.

the pattern on a Dwarf is a lot more "busy"
i have 2:1 that are 8-9 months of age,
feed 1 x small rat every 5-7 day's.
weigh in at around the 220 - 260 gram.
