Spanish moss

whatnowreptiles Aug 21, 2008 12:55 PM

is spanish moss safe to use as a bedding? in the past i've used sphagnum moss with no problems. i just bought some spanish moss at the hardware store and i decided to read the bag before i put it in any tanks. it has a notice that reads: wear gloves for protection when using this product. buyer assumes all responsibility for safety and use not in accordance with directions. Caution: keep this product out of the reach of children. keep from contact with eyes, cuts. or sores. wash hands after use. so would this be because of allergies, possibly fire hazard, is it harmful if swallowed?, keep out of reach from kids cause its in a plastic bag? this one got me confused. its use on the bag is for soil cover for potted plants and lining hanging flower baskets. also nowhere on it does it say anything about containg any fertilizers. thanks for any help.

My Guess is that it is treated to prevent rot and is actually dead moss. In reality spanish moss is not a moss at all. It is a bromeliad!! related to what they breed Dart Frogs in.

The live stuff would be OK but requires High light and frequent misting and high humidity. SO not a BP candidate.

Sum it up stick with mosser lee brand canadian sphagnum or a quality New Zealand sphagnum. New zealand almost NEVER rots.

that's wierd...........I've cut it up and used it for nest boxes with colubrids......

>? theoretically it should be just moss.....

if it's garden type...

if it's "craft type" it may be coated with something?...to keep it from rotting?......
