theLady Aug 21, 2008 01:19 PM

my kingsnake has some raised scales on her bottom scales, just behind the head, they feel weird and have never seen them before, they almost make a bumpy pattern in terms of rubbing my finger down her belly? anybody know wot this is/ or if it's just normal? thx for your time!!!

Maybe water blisters, are they clear and filled with fluid ? Or are they brown dry and scabby looking ?
Take out the water bowl and check to see if your humidity is too high.check that your ventlation is good.

there's two water dishes and one below a red 50 watt. they are more dark and brown looking, but smooth bumps. She's a kingsnake, idk lol

without a photo is hard to say but it may be water blisters .Is the enclosure vented well ?Is it damp or moldy ? Does she sit in her water lately. I use benitine on these but iodine will help and take out the water for a few days I have had snakes die om me from this sort of stuff so nip it in the bud now

alright thanks for the help. i have a picture of the bumps, i don't know how to put it up tho!! i'm new to these things. it si well ventilated and yes she has been in her water a lot lately, i just treated her for mites, with the betadine soaking as well as the mineral oil soaking, perhaps a result of these blisters? thx for ur help

Yes,..that definitely sounds like a fungal infection(mycotic dermatitis) commonly found in snakes that are exposed to conditions that are too moist. It starts as a fungus and is quickly prone to becoming bacterial as well. Raised water "blisters", and brownish colored ventral scales are tell-tale signs of this.

I have also heard of Providone Iodine, and/or soaking in hydrogen peroxide to be affective in treating these fungal infections. I also agree with the "other" Doug, and that this needs to be treated ASAP or it can become very serious in a short time. Many snakes have met their demise from this not being promptly treated.

Do as the other poster also mentioned, and remove the waterbowl, put clean dry newspaper down in the cage, and only allow it to drink periodically once a day or so while under your supervision so it won't crawl into, or spill the water...which will only make matters worse.

After a week or so of treating(soaking) in the medication mentioned above, you should start to see an improvement, but continue this for another week or so afterwards to make absolutely sure all the bacteria is killed.

I would also keep very close tabs on this for a good while afterwards as well, to make certain this doesn't reoccur.

good luck with this!, ~Doug

ai yai yai, i hope not! i have done so with the water dishes. i recently treated her for mites, soaking her in the betadine (povidone-iodine), as well as the mineral oil soaking; perhaps this was the cause. but i've taken the dishes out. thanks for the help!!
