??Calico Bumble bee aka the "Cali Bee"

Jay_Cassidy Aug 21, 2008 02:04 PM

I want to say thank you to all who replied to my last post. Unfortunately I didn't get to see all the comments, I've been extremely busy and this is the first time I've been online since I posted her 3 weeks ago.
Well, unfortunately Im not sure what she is. I breed my original spider to a pastel female. I've had numerous clutches from my spider over the years and never got anything out of the ordinary. The female pastel on the other hand was a virgin. And this little beauty was the only fertile egg out of 4.
Now my guess is my pastel female might be a crappie looking pastel calico that slipped threw. After looking all over the web the closest thing she resembles to me is a "super pastel calico".
But I know she's not. So Im guessing she might be a "spider pastel calico" a.k.a. a calico bumble bee witch I've been calling my "Cali Bee". If anyone has any info that could help me figure this whole thing out please contact me. Pics of pastel calicos would be very helpful preferably adults or subadults.
Thank you all again!!!

Looks like a really nice super pastel to me. I recently had a friend send some pics to verify a new morph. They were just mojaves but he swore he never had a mojave with the female. A couple days later he agreed what they were but still says he never had a mojave with the girl. He must of put the wrong snake in her tub. I don't see any spider in her and she doesn't look like any of the pastel calico.

That thing is really nice! It aint got any spider or calico in it though! Id say crazy looking super pastel. Did you have a pastel male near her last year?

qiksilver5 Aug 21, 2008 04:22 PM

I don't see any spider, and I could be wrong, but I also see no calico, so no calibee or whatever you wanna call it.

What was the female with last year?

Sperm retention is a wonderful thing it seems. Pretty snake no matter what it is.

I read where you mentioned the only male the pastel mom was ever with was the spider and that this was the only good egg. I'm not aware of a commercial paternity test for snakes but maybe you could find a university to do some custom tests on this girl, her mom, and the spider male to help get to the bottom of this.

One possibility is parthenogenesis where this girl might not have a father. The thing is I think of the two types of parthenogenesis identified in snakes the one where half of mom’s genetic material doubles up (which could produce a super pastel also homozygous for half the other genes mom has perhaps adding to the weirdness) would only produce males and it sounds like this baby is a girl. The kind of parthenogenesis that produces females produces exact clones of mom but maybe this could be a new type where two egg cells merge or something like that.

AWESOME!!!! My vote for the best hatch of the year!...but thats just my 2 cents! Mike

I can't beleave her Head is that blushed out. Maybe it is some kind of super form. Ive heard of Pastels throwing Supers by themselfs. But that one looks Xtra Super. I do see maybe some signs of a spider in there, the white coming up her sides. Who knows, but thats one wicked Animal.

Here are some photos of some pastel calicos that I hatched out. The calico that I bred could have very easily passed for a normal there was a bare minimum of white in him yet he produced some nice babies. I would think that either the spider or the pastel that you used is also a very low grade calico. Either way an awsome looking snake.

...is just too nice.
It's pattern definitely stands out amongst the other Pastel Calicos I recall seeing.
I wonder what that one will look like in a year's time??...

(I've seen photos of plenty of sub-adult/adult PastelCalicos, but NONE had a pattern near as funky as that one's. Not to mention all that blushing...)

And from a Low-White father too...
Congrats on that one.

I don't see any calico or spider in it either. It does have quite a few flames coming up it's sides and it's belly is extremely white.

Could you post some pics of the sire and dam (along with the obligatory belly shots of course)?

Maybe looking at it's parents we will be able to help you determine if you have a low grade morph buried in there somewhere.

P.S. Like everyone else said... gorgeous snake. Even if she does prove out to be "just" as pastel... she is one hell of a looker!

grownfeathers Aug 23, 2008 05:33 PM

ralph Davis produced a calico spider it looks nothing like that snake. It's on his 2008 birthing records I think page 5. She's hot!
