lackluster farmed meraukes

coolhl7 Aug 21, 2008 08:05 PM

this is an honest question and not meant to ruffle feathers:
where are the insane looking meraukes we see in books or european collections? why does it seem so few farm bred meraukes develop really nice clean looking stripes? the price now seems reasonable but the quality seems inferior....am I missing something???

Even with Arus, the white is much better in WC animals. Don't believe they don't import WC adults. IMHO, it has something to do with diet, environment, and natural sunlight. Who knows....but I know what you mean.

that nature abhores extremes. Many of the w/c animals that have the very big white lines and stripes will not produce another like them. It is true in almost any breeding of any species. The finest bred to the finest may only produce one of equal quality. The rest will be a happy medium. Ask any horse or dog breeder. It's possible that the offspring are not very high white, but their offspring will be. There are breeders out there producing hi white aru lines consistantly. It's all genetics as far as I'm concerned. Now...if you inbreed a lot, that's a different story...

Even the HW's that Eugene Bessette has produced couldn't hold a candle to a HW Wild Caught Aru. It's just one of those captive mysteries untill someone starts producing them consistantly. We know HW animals can be produced through mixed lineages, but so far it hasn't happened with the LT animals
