wild babies

This female Eastern box turtle laid eggs in the middle of my sister's back yard on June 25th. She has dogs, cats and a lawn service that the babies would have had to survive, so I dug them up and incubated them. They're hatching as I type this. Four have emerged and three are in the process. I'll be releasing them in the woods that the mother came out of at the back of the property. Here are a mess o' photos of the process, from beginning to end. Enjoy.

Good work!

We just released 3 River Cooter hatchlings yesterday: they were the silver lining to a tragic event, in that they hatched from the salvaged eggs of a road-kill female. We let them go within 200 yards of where the female had met her end.

It was great to watch them sprint into the water and make a bee-line for clumps of aquatic vegetation for cover.

Very cool. Hopefully they'll make it to adulthood and pass those genes along.

Great post. Excellent photography.

Are you going to get them started on their first few meals before release?
