Favorite BRB Enclosures?

sean1976 Aug 22, 2008 06:40 PM

What is your favorite enclosure for BRB's and why?

I am looking at getting 2-5 stackable BRB enclosures in the near future and I wanted to know what everyone preffered and why. I'd like to know Dimensions as well as the other stat's (model, maker, etc...). Also if there are any problems you have run into with some enclosure designs that information would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance

Sean.

I have boaphiles, reptiracks, some home built cages and a few fish tanks. I'll tell you the problems with all of them :D

Boaphiles: the doors are hinged at the bottom of the cages so you have to open a door that's the whole length of the cage. If you have it at eye level and have a nippy snake looking for food, it's hard not to get bit. They are also made of thinner material, so if they are hit by the sun, they sag. I do like that they are light, and I do like their latches.

Repi-Racks: the doors slide, so if you have substrate, it gets in the tracking, so you have to be really careful that the doors are closing all the way. Also if you close the door too hard it puts stress on the outside wall of the cage (I've had 1 out of 12 crack). I like the sliding doors though because you can open the door 4 inches and slide a mouse in there on tongs and be protected by the glass from getting tagged. They also seem to keep humidity really well, and I haven't had one sag yet. Also, these have been the cheapest cages I've found in the size I use. You also have to assemble these.

Home built: It's hard to get everything to fit together just right and materials can sometimes be as expensive as buying a cage.

Fish Tanks: obviously for BRBs they don't hold humidity, so you have to cover the cages with all sorts of things to get them from drying out. If you get the ones with the sliding tops they seem to be inescapable which is awesome, BUT the cages can seem to be latched and you can actually leave the top slightly open and not realize it, unless you're really careful.

My vote is for repti-racks. Being cost efficient and relatively durable with the sliding doors I like, I think these are the best I've found so far.

My bf's vote is for boaphiles. He likes the latches because he can't possibly mess up closing the cage.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the info. I hadn't heard the sagging issue which would be a problem possibly for me since the snakeroom has a east facing window in it. I'm not so worried about the sliding glass doors though because, with the exception of my hatchling rack, I feed the snakes in feeding containers.

Any other or additional information is still greatly appreciated

Sean.

One option for the boaphiles is a dual door one, I know Jeff makes them and for feeding I only open the door just enough to lower the rat in.

My home made cages are my favorites, I do have the tools and experience to make them right and YES, the materials are more than buying a less expensive plastic cage.

I don't have any of the other cages so can't say.

I have Boaphiles now and am really happy with them - that said I am now looking at getting animal plastics cages.

The reason - I am looking at moving my snakes to a cooler place in the house. The animal plastics cages are 1/2 inch thick, so I would think they would hold heat better.

I've got both Boaphile and Reptile Basics cages, I prefer the 1/2" Reptile Basics cages, the Boaphile is thinner and one of mine is bowed, the other is cracked in the front.

I've also got RB racks, they're also 1/2" and perform exactly as expected. I've got a wooden homemade rack as well, but its heavy and tall.

I recently got a Animal Plastics cage and plan to get another this year.
Fairly Simple to setup, heat very nice and holds humidity well.
I keep a 40 pound 18 year old red tail boa in my recently purchased cage, easy to clean and feed for me.
Plus AP were extremity nice over the phone and customer service was great.
My vote AP!!!
