Greenville Eastern King

Steve_Craig Aug 23, 2008 01:05 PM

Here's a few photos I took of my 06 Greenville, SC. Eastern. She has a nice light yellow chain pattern on on black. Thanks for looking.
Antelope (Todd) I want to see some pics of your Greenville Easterns when you get a chance. It would be cool to see how the Greenville siblings differ from each other. Steve

Looks like it's getting pretty close to being an intergrade.

Steve_Craig Aug 24, 2008 08:41 AM

An intergrade with what? Nigra? Not sure what influence you're seeing, but she is 100 percent Eastern king. She's an F1 animal from parents that were collected from Greenville, SC.

I was "just sayin'" that the pattern of thin bands and unconnected chain on the lower laterals reminds me of the intergrades in GA. I wasn't slamming your snake. BTW, that range map is wrong...here's the new map from a book soon to be released:

and here's an intergrade snake from GA:

YES!!!!!! When will this book become available? I can't wait.

Thanks,
Dan

No offense taken. I was just curious in what you saw that hinted at intergrad, and you gave your answer in what you saw. I have no problem with that. There is a ton of variation in pure eastern kings, not even counting intergrades, and I can see your point by the picture you had posted. Eastern Kings may very well have a certain look in that part of SC that are influenced by the geography. Good pic of the updated getula range. Looks like the far western side of SC is still a couple of hurnderd miles from the intergrade zone.

Your map in FL is crazy... Dixie and Columbia County FL should have intergrades. Columbia has pure easterns as well as intergrades. Dixie is probably the same.

The map is based on Krysko's research and his map. I will also show a map similar to the one in the Eastern Field Guide by Conant and Collins. Herpers can choose which one to believe. Intergrade status is not always defined the same way among everyone. What you might be calling an intergrade may be a pure FL King by someone else's standards. As far as Krysko is concerned, the snakes by Lake Okeechobee are Florida Kings, not intergrades. The scientists make the rules, not us flunkys. I don't know where those counties are that you mentioned. As for the county with pure Easterns, well, I don't know about that, either...I'll check it out. Thanks.

"The map is based on Krysko's research and his map."

In my limited experience maps are simple guides based on the observations of one or a few individuals. Being in print doesn't make them 100% accurate for every observation that comes along. At the edges people should expect variation not reflected by the map. It wouldn't be half as fun otherwise.

Exactly, and you know what? I have to point that out continually because otherwise people will think if they step over the imaginary line all the morphs will change automatically.

tricolorbrian Aug 25, 2008 01:18 PM

OK, NICK, glad we got that straightened out. The map is fixed.

tricolorbrian Aug 24, 2008 11:15 PM

Actually, Greenville appears to be no more than 60 or 70 miles from the edge of the intergrade zone in GA. That may explain the thin bands.

cochran Aug 24, 2008 11:23 AM

Very nice Steve!! Intergrade?? I don't see it!! Jeff

tricolorbrian Aug 24, 2008 01:51 PM

I didn't say it was an intergrade, just closer than normal...I keep forgetting that I need to carefully word stuff on this forum or people misinterpret. See my answer to Steve.

I've posted this picture before... I wish I had more pictures of the little guy. We caught him in my parents' front yard in Easley, SC... in 2000, I believe. He was absolutely gorgeous. I wasn't well-versed on keeping WC snakes at the time, so he went back into my parents' yard, to continue eating whatever rodents he found there. They lived on Breazeale Road at the time, and if you're familiar with it, I'm sure you understand why we released him WAY back on their property, away from that insane road. ^_^
