Mature follicles/Ovulate?

mwrinkle Aug 23, 2008 05:14 PM

I have a 10 month female who was never mated. Iv'e posted on here previously about the animals lack of energy/appetite after the winter then treatment by vet for worms/coccididia. Finally although its energy improved it still didn't eat, after giving it some appetite stimulant paste it prolapsed twice. I took it back to another vet who decided on a 2 week trial of Trimethsulfa to take care of a problematic digestive track. While the animals energy has improved to normal levels it is still not eating. Before it went off feed it tried to get out of its cage and dig a lot in the corners. It continued digging even when it was listless. Now that its energy is normal although it doesn't eat it is extremely restless trying to climb, digging and posturing towards its own reflection with head bobbing and biting. This sound a lot like an article I just read from Dr. Scott Stahl which includes reproductive problems where the animal has ovulated or developed mature follicles without mating. Has anyone run into this?

Bearded dragons certainly can ovulate etc without being mated..but they just produce infertile eggs. If she has infertile eggs and is looking to find a suitable place to lay them, then you need to provide an egg laying box. Typically a deep container large enough your dragon can move and turn around in, with dampened sand or a sand/soil (untreated soil, children's playsand) mix so it clumps up nicely but no or very little liquid oozes up when you squeeze it hard..but it should form clumps fine. A partial hole can be started for your female. Using a light, warming the sand up can help too. Place your female in and she should start digging around in short order.

I was thinking of the mature follicles rather than eggs two vet visits with an xray and much probing of the underbelly would have turned up eggs. If it is the follicles what can be done about it?

if she has no eggs then she may be scratching around for completely different reasons.. probably be a good idea to give a full detailed description of your cage setup, age of dragon, temps, what it is fed, substrate, temps and all that.

I hesitant to render an opinion without way more information. I'd like to know all the husbandry items, plus length, weight, and when all the treatments were.
