I am hopefully getting a veiled chameleon in the next month or sooner :D but im not surre about plants.. I have a croton and a pothos but i want a taller plant... not ficus because of what ive heard that the sap can do to the cham... And i was looking for somthing a little bit cheeper then the 60 dollar canadaian hibiscus.... any ideas??

pothosare best to use in a veiled enclosure becuase they will eat leaves ficus are ok but the sap cuase eye irratation but that is only if the sap touchs the chams eye right after trimming....so pothos and ficus should be used..

i have heard citrus trees will work and they would smell really nice.. i though the croton is poissonis..so i wouldn't use it.

not to say steal but you could break a branch off a hibiscus and grow a tree from the cutting but it would take a while to get up to size

You could always try Schefflera (sp?) I have one in my males cage and it collects water droplets perfectly on the leaves when you mist. I got mine at Meijers ( dont know if thats common in canada) but any large department store like a walmart / kmart etc should have them

Hope that helps!

schifflera are acutally toxic. if your chameleon doesn't ever eat it's plants, then you might be able to get away with it, but a veiled will eat it's plants. sschifflera can cause vomiting in small children, so imagine what it could do to your comparably tiny cham!

Hi-

I have to disagree with you on this. "Umbrella" Plant Schafflera actinophylla(toxic) Schefflera arboricola AKA dwarf Schefflera is non-toxic. Below is a picture of a Schefflera arboricola, I use these in almost all my cages with other plants. Also have to say I have seen chameleons eat ficus leafs both dead and alive on the tree. The chameleons are still alive, I could see a possible problem if they are consumed in large amounts. Hope this helps!

I was at Target the other day (don't know if there's Target on the east coast or not) and they had some nice Hibiscus plants for cheap. They had 3 different species that were all only like 6 bucks and they were anywhere from 2 feet to 4 feet tall (1 gallon pot). They also had some Hibiscus trees for like 25 bucks that were about 7 feet tall. Don't know if the one here has any left cause I keep buying them all. Hibiscus plants are great. Collect water good and my veileds eat the heck out of the flowers. Try it.

i've actually done the research on it........according to all my searches, and the reference desk at the library, eriogonum umbrellum is non-toxic, all other forms of umbrella and schifflera are mildly toxic to humans...........i actually do the research before i make decisions on these things...........
