Thought of a question we all could get into......

Of all your rainbows, at what approximate age did you acquire them? I'll post my data up in a while. Will take me a while to put it together and am off to dinner / running around right now.

For babies how old were they when they arrived in your care?

I bought both of my BRB's from a breeder I know at the Sacramento Reptile Show. They were both 3 months old when I bought/picked them up.

Mine have all been less than a year old - well one might have been about a year old. In 07 I bought a lot of really nice babies, so I have taken time to raise all of my snakes.

I would buy awesome proven adults, if the right ones would come available.

I have a total of six that came to me as adults of unknown age...

Savannah came to me in 2004, she was full grown but not old, maybe about 2000??

In 2006 Howard Leong offered to sell me his breeding trio (including parents of Daisey) Duh, was an easy decision. Probably born before 2000 but I can't put a year on them.

In 2007 I bought Eve as mother of Genevieve. She's a WC female, my only WC animal. No idea how old she is.

Fluffy, the adult Calico, unknown age came to me in 2007

I have another five that came to me as yearlings -

Porky and Petunia, from a breeder in Washington, born in 1993, got them mid 1994.

Dottie, a hypo from Mike Lockwood, was born in 2004 and came to me in 2005.

Crystal. Also born in 2004 and came to me in 2005.

Dawn, from EBN, a hypo born in 2006 came to me as a yearling in 2007

Then there various groups and individuals that came to me more less a few months old.... Too many to mention individually, total of 17.26

1.2 born at Mikes, my het hypos from our joint breeding project.

1.1 at a few days old from Jess

Lastly, I have 6.10 that were born here and never left

My first BRB, Pele, I bought at the Tinley park NARBC show two years ago. She had 1 meal in her. When I started noticing how big she was getting I decided to find her a mate. Fuzzbutt, my Hypo male was an '06 I bought from Mike Lockwood, a litter older than a year old. Then I was hooked... most of the snakes I bought since have been '07s, 4 other '06s, and 5 Wild Caught Adults for genetic diversity.

Dave,

Won't take me very long to gather my data.
I got my ARB at around 3-4 weeks old.

As an aside, I got my Indigo at at about 3 1/2 to 4 months old. Took a while for him to get established eating, and the permit process took about as long.

Thanks,
Ed

I only have one BRB, and I got him in April of 2007 from Leaping Lizards. I asked them what month he was born, but they couldn't tell me (it was probably in 2006). They said he was about 18 inches long. Now he's about 3 feet long.

How old would an 18-20 inch BRB typically be?

Thanks Jeff. That suggests Loki was even younger than I thought when I first got him. The store was feeding him fuzzies, so that makes sense.

That's the same place I got both of my geckos - great little reptile store. They seem to take good care of all their animals, and the owner is really enthusiastic about reptiles. You can tell that while it's obviously a business and probably her main source of income, she really does care about and like the animals. I've seen her at the register with a ball python over her shoulder before, and once even just hanging out with a big iguana behind the counter while one of her small staff ran the register.

I almost always wander around the store for a few minutes looking at all the snakes and lizards before getting crickets for my geckos, just because it's a pleasure to see so many healthy, inquisitive reptiles peeking out at you. It's especially funny/cute when there's a whole row of baby bearded dragons standing up with their front feet on the edge of their cage window wondering if you have something for them to eat.

Yeah, it's a cool little store. I have to admit I've only been in it once (when I bought Loki) because it's so far from where I live. I'm very near Twin Cities Reptiles, so I go there more frequently. I bought Loki at Leaping Lizards on the advice of a fellow member of the Minnesota Herpetological Society (James Soos, the guy who edits our newsletter) because he said he'd bought lots of animals there and had always been happy with them. I wanted a BRB (FAST, before my husband changed his mind!) and Leaping Lizards was the only store that had them at the time. Twin Cities Reptiles has a breeding pair but had no babies at that moment. Loki's been a real sweetheart!

I plan to go back to the store very soon, because I have a Leaping Lizards $75 gift certificate that's burning a hole in my pocket. Also, the breeder says my baby blood python finally ate something (YAY! She's been holding out for over 2 months) and so I may actually get her sometime in the near future; and I want to get a thermostat and heat pad for her initial enclosure.

LOL! I have seen that many times at that store and I always get a good chuckle! I love that store, and she takes great care of the animals. I haven't been there in a while, since moving to WI. Hopefully I'll make it back that way soon!
