Thanks,

I opened my mouth and out flowed a melody black.
Why take two of the rarest and most beautiful rat snakes in the hobby and create hybrids? I know I'm a purist but I don't see the point in messing with genetics like this.
Graham.

the cross isn't a north american black rat with a euro ladder snake, two species from thousands of miles apart but two subspecies that are almost the same snakes to start with. i guess it just seemed natural to me. even a purist can see that the snakes are awesome right?
Those are horrible crosses and you must get rid of them ASAP!!! You can send them to me and I will, um, dispose of them properly...lol.

I had to laugh----I knew someone would whine about hybrids!!!

Chad is there much variation within the clutch, as hybrids typically show a wide variation of pattern, have you got any photo's of the clutch mates to share please ? One worrying thing for the purists I think is that these hybrids/crosses are not that dissimilar to the multi banded pure coxi that you hatched out back in September 2007 and could go on in future years to contaminate gene pools. Was the cross done just to produce some funky looking snakes or to bring some fresh blood into a very small captive gene pool ?
Link to clutch from 2007 showing a coxi whose bands extended through the stripes and down the sides, you would expect coxi hatchling bands to be contained within the stripes ?

we had one cross last year, vaillanti x coxi. this year we have hatched out lata x coxi and another vaillanti x coxi. i have other cross eggs cooking now. in fact today i put pulchra x coxi eggs in the incubator.
all the babies look the same. there isn't any real difference at all between clutch mates. tomorrow i'll have robyn post the lata x coxi photos. man they are awesome!
i do have concern about what other will do with these crosses. at this point i don't think i'll be selling any. I have plenty of non-cross stuff to sell so it was more of a one time learning deal than trying to "improve" the looks of these great snakes. i'll watch them grow and see if they have a different look than the pure stuff. if they are strongly different than the pure stock i may sell a few. but most likely not.
sorta like a Steeler with an Eagle helmet on?....both Pa right?.......sorry.....not into football and I forget where you went from Pitt.......
anyways......I thought the same thing......WHY
......they are close but ot the same.......
go to the milksnake forum..they want the subspecies locality specific.....as the same county .or the same bluff or side of the road.........
I like hybrids......I just don't own any coxi or vallianti yet (spell?).....
.......heck....I can't find cave rats when I want them that aren't all males, over priced or stunted from not being fed enough, and being drug from show to show....
....NICE Snakes yes.........but the liars and thieves will now get a cheaper bunch of coxi and mix them with a val. and call them vals pure and overprice them....
guess I have to look again and see the physical differences between the criosses and pure....
Tahnxx......keep pics coming......

......
I have to agree with Graham. Each subspecies is incredible on it's own with out mixing them.

Incredible!!!!
I'm not a purist but I just don't see the reason to cross these two either. They are both variable anyhow. I can't think it will make them any more or less popular just muddy now.
Klaus must be crying somewhere!

Glenn sorry you couldn't make it to the storm.....I mean make it to Daytona this year.

Hey, sorry I missed you guys. I haven't been to Daytona in a long time, kinda miss the ol' times. I was so busy with the moving in to our new AZ place, selling houses, etc, etc. Hopefully, next year...
PS: As far as the cross goes, ya' know it's bound to happen eventually. Let's just hope the snakes are well represented and there continues to be purists out there too.
Cheers...Terry
