cage sizes

GoodSmeagol Aug 23, 2008 11:26 PM

I have bearded dragons....

I have had kingsnakes...

I Tree Boa...

I look and look, and cant find good care sheets.
One I found said an 18" cube would suffice for an adult.
Right away I said YEH RIGHT, and stopped reading,
at a small? 6 feet, it wouldnt even fit into that cage!

So, how big of a cage do I need?

My dragons are in 4x2x2,
would a cage the same size positioned 4 feet up, be big enough?

Thanks!
also, any good care sheets you may know of... post my way

There's plenty of cages available on the market that will be fine for an adult. 18X20, 18x24 20x20, 20x24, 24x24....

Set them up with good perches, a water dish, and mist their cage daily.

Really, that small of a cage?
I can totaly fit that around my apartment.
Is going bigger bad? 4'tall 2'x2' widths...?
Thanks

>>Really, that small of a cage?

Well, keep in mind they average 4 feet as adults, with some hitting 5 feet, and the occasional giant hitting 6 feet.

And YES...4x2x2 would be great, the sizes I listed are fine, but bigger is better.

I keep pairs in 28x24x24 cages and they do great in there. I have perches mounted in there and provide a water bowl. I never mist my animals or cages and my animals breed every other year like clockwork.

Cool, it couldn't get any better than that huh? I'm guessing you live in a high humidity area?

Adult females (especially when pregnant) I like to keep in a 4x2x2 cage (with 2 ft being the height) so they have plenty of room to thermoregulate when pregnant.

I am planning on keeping males in 3x2x2 cages and I honestly think I am being very generous with room.

This picture was taken of a fairly good sized (5 ft plus) female while pregnant in a 4x2x2 cage. I certainly think it is more than enough.

I agree; definitely more than enough space

Like you, I tend to like wider cages rather than the stereotypical tall cage for tree boas. I've kept them in cages up to 5 feet wide in the past and they would use every inch of it. Just because they live 10-30 feet off the ground doesn't necessarily mean they prefer their cage to be an extra foot or two taller. They seem to really enjoy having the side to side roaming room.
