Cooling Carpets

worldsocold Aug 24, 2008 02:26 PM

Hey everybody i have a few questions as far as breeding and the cooling period of specifically Coastal carpets is concerned.

I have a Trio that at lest my male and my one female are more than ready at 5 years old and 7 and 8 ft respectively. Ive been reading but i wanted to ask peoples opinions on when they start there cooling periods and how far they drop down the temps.

Also what do you feel would be better, maternal or artificial incubation?

As far as artificial incubation goes, what would be the best incubator to get?

Any additional information is greatly appreciated thank ypu

I allow the herp room to cool around 10 degrees or slightly lower along with the seasons. It starts to get cold here around October and starts warming up in March or April. They always have a hot spot during the day and I continue to feed them if they will eat, but make sure they can get up to warm temps during the day.
Artificial incubation is easiest and most stress free for the most part, but there are many benefits to maternal incubation. If you do decide to try maternal, you will want to set up the females cage so she has a pretty constant 87 or 88 F temp area. The substrate in the nest box should be dry, but humidity should be high. When I have done maternal, I just use a very large water bowl next to the hot spot or a mostly contained nest box so the humidity stays high, while everything else stays dry. Wet will kill the eggs very quickly.
I have some custom made and homemade incubators as well as hovabators. There are many ways to skin a cat.
