Leucistic western hognoses

electricbluescat Sep 04, 2003 08:35 PM

Anyone know who originated these hognoses? I have only seen a few. Are leucistic western hognoses more difficult to produce than the albino western hognoses? i am getting a pair of 2003 normal western hognose hatchlings soon. Right now I cannot afford an albino. They are really cool but expensive.

I have only ever literally seen one leucistic hognose. That was because it was seized from the gentleman who was selling them. He is the only one I know of who has ever produced these. I don't know if there are any of the offspring out in the hobby some of the ones he sold were seized as well. The leucistic originated in Colorado. It is illegal to sell or trade native colorado reptiles. It is one of the coolest snakes I have ever seen.

In Georgia we can have a native venomous snake without a permit but not a native nonvenomous snake. I have only seen a few leucistic western hognoses. I did not see any at the Daytona show. I asked the owner of albinohognose.com and he told me they are still fairly new so I guess theres not many people breeding them. The albino hognoses are also cool but they are expensive. I saw some nice albinos at the daytona show.

It is my feeling that when morphs of these rare or endangered animals are found that exceptions be made to leagalize them and their offspring. What better way to insure the survivability and lessening the pressure on a wc population than by having morphs available? They would not survive in nature thats a given.Any more info on them???Jeff

I have been to that locality where it was found often and collected hognose there over the years also.
