leaving males with babies

nygrip Aug 24, 2008 11:23 PM

does anyone on here leave their males in with the females right through their raising of the babies and let them keep breeding while the females are nursing,,,,,,,ive been taking them out and missing too much time between litters by waiting until one litter is weaned before they get pregnant again,,,,,,,,,thanks,,,,,,Jerry

I've done it both ways, and like you said, you miss out on a cycle or two by removing the male. The male won't bother the babies. At least, I've never had one do so within the 3 - 4 years I've been raising rats.

Back when I used 2 40-gallon breeder tanks as community tanks I pulled moms out a day or two before they gave birth and put them in 10-gallon tanks. It was hard to keep pace with my snake feedings. Then I started keeping mating pairs together. It helped but now that I'm using a rack I made I wonder why I didn't do it earlier.

With a rack I keep 1 male with 3 females, continuously. Now I need another rack.

If you've got any kind of a heart at all, you'll be fascinated with the way dad interacts with the babies. My wife & I used to watch the dads play with his kids quite often. Nature at one of it's finest moments.

Have a good one!

I leave my male w my females but it depends on your male sometimes they will kill the babies you can leave the male in until after she has her litter then he will breed her after she is done giving birth but i would wacth him to make sure he doesnt go after the babies most of my females guard their babies so usually you wont have a prob but if this is her first litter defanetly watch the male

I always leave them together. I even move them around....never had a male kill anyone. The danger comes moving a male into a group with young babies that the moms will kill him.
