Quick ? - F1s, F2s, parent to child?

AbsoluteApril Aug 25, 2008 03:58 PM

Hi Folks,

Quick question. As I understand it, any boa x any boa, the babies are F1 offspring, two siblings bred together are F2s. Is there terminology for a mother to son, father to daughter? (besides inbred, line bred whatever you want to call it). Would these also be F2s or a new generation of F1s?

I'd like to eventually pair Zahara with her son RedBoy and not sure what to call them besides just mother to son. I think they might make some pretty babies.

Thanks!

I don't think Fx applies to being bred back to parent. I'd just state it as it is, Male bred back to mother to enhance/refine xyz pattern/color etc. Line breeding is a valuable tool to refining any line but duh, to be done sparingly.

I'd just say that the babies were produced from your "high color" project from the selective breeding of a mother to her son. Good luck!

Thanks! I will definitely be telling people that it was mother to son. I don't do much boa breeding but I do make sure people have pics and as much history about the parents as possible.
Take care,

thanks Dave! I wasn't sure if it would apply or not.

I agree and luckily the father is completely un-related to Zahara, I think doing it once won't be too bad. Most of my plans involve outcrossing the lines but with this pair, I just don't think I could resist seeing the offspring.

Hope you're having a great day... do you have any anery brbs expected this season?

They would still be considered F1's. F1 X F2 = F1 F2 X F8 = F1 and so on. Any time something new/different is added to the mix, the resulting offspring are defaulted back to the first Filial generation

IMO, F1 and F2 are best left to actual genetics projects.

Any boa X any boa --> baby boas rather than F1s.

A mother X son mating is also called a mother X son backcross.

IMO, the best way to give information on the breeding is to give the buyer a pedigree.

"backcross" is the term I was trying to remember!
