blood won't eat

Raggid Aug 25, 2008 07:47 PM

i got a blood python about 3 weeks ago and he ate the 2nd night i had him but now he has not eaten since then. i feed him fresh killed adult mice and leave them in his tank over night, but every morning the mouse will still be there. he's about 12-14 inches long. i was thinking maby trying smaller mice but i wasn't sure. any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
ian

Don't just leave them in the tank. With tongs, wiggly the rodent by the snake to get a response from it. Don't tap the snake, just wiggly it around. Not all snakes like to eat tv dinners, some like to catch their food. These are hunters and young snakes especially need to be conditioned to eat dead prey. Feed when the light is lower and at night for best results.

How long are you wiggling? Honestly it takes a little bit of work to get these babies feeding. My one borneo is a good 5 min wiggle. She needs the rodent in JUST the right spot dancing JUST right. She also prefers the temp to be around 104-105 degrees. Not to mention that the transit and shipping and rehoming can cause stress.

Can you share a bit about your cage (type and size), the size of the snake and your temps/humidity. Perhaps there is something other than basic feeding problems contributing.

i only wiggle it for about a minute. the cage it's in is a 5.5 gallon glass tank with a closed top with a few holes in it, the bedding is sphagnum moss, it has an under tank heater on on side, i spray the cage once a day, and it's only about 85 degrees on the hot side and 75 on the cold

Wiggle longer definately! Also consider covering 3 of the 4 sides with paper.

Do you have a hide?

i don't have a very good hide, it's just one of those half log hides from petco. and i'll definitely cover the sides. would black cloth make him feel more secure than white paper? or does it not matter?

If it were me, I would use a darker cover. But definately set aside a good 5 mins for wiggle time!
