How do you make sure snakes wont fight

Tapout Aug 26, 2008 09:28 AM

Hi
i have let my two snakes close to each other (by hand) but

pulled them away when they got too close because i did not want

them to bite. I know you should feed them first but is that all

you need to do? They flick tongues at eachother but i think they

they will strike if i leave them alone (not in my hand). Am i

just being over cautious or is there a size differance that you

should stay away from when pairing snakes. One is about 10" the other is about 20".

Thanks for reading

your 10" snake could easily become a meal for the 20" snake. Feeding them first will put them in feeding mode and increase the odds of that happening, IMO.

IMO, don't pair sub adult kings. Adults can be acclimated to each other and housed together all year long, but separated for feeding.

The best way to ensure that kingsnakes will not eat one another is to not put them together..

Putting a 10" kingsnake with a 20" kingsnake is almost like introducing a Lion to a Gazelle. It doesn't take too much imagination to picture what could very possibly happen in that situation,.....and as already mentioned,....especially young ones at that!

No I wasn't. At the last minute my father in law was hospitalized and I had to call the trip off. Tried to find a late flight but cost was prohibative given all the cancellations and what not related to the storm. In any case Howie picked up the snake I was interested in, my wife's Dad came through OK and I had three days off to spend swimming and crabbing with the kids . All in all not a bad outcome.

Tony,.........

That is fantastic news that your father is okay!,...I'm really glad to hear that. I met up with Howie, and we had a great time chatting about stuff!.

It's good that Howie was able to score on a snake you were interested in too,..it's handy to have good friends!

Howie's definitely one of the "good guys" in my book!

best regards, ~Doug

Tie their hands behind their backs and tape their mouths shut before placing them together.

FR Aug 26, 2008 06:58 PM

Oh god, you know that snakes have no legs. Remember we had that arguement, and again you won. I thought they should all have legs, and you bet they would be fine without them, but again you had your way and won. Cheers

I still keep kings in groups and even feed them in groups, without problem. Done so for forty years or so(more actually)

Which means, some are missing something. The question is, what are we missing? if I have done this for many decades, and others find it impossible?????? What allows my(these) kings to get along and live and breed and feed together, and others kings eat eachother???? To me, that is the question. Not FR is a punk, but instead, what allows THOSE kings to successfully stay together? that is the question. I wish those that say it cannot be done would explain the those answers to me. Cheers

>> Which means, some are missing something.

Exactly. For me, not feeding together is all about me. There's no doubt I miss many things, but if one of my kings finishes faster than the other, I can predict what will happen within 10 seconds.

I'm also positive that my husbandry is less than perfect, but I try to do the best with what I have available. Sincerely, I would like to improve that to the point that my animals are extremely well supported.

It's important to remember that there are all manner of keepers in this forum, ranging from fantastic to very poor. Our advice must be tailored as such.

I always love your posts, even this one (not so much the God / Apostle posts) because you never come right out with an answer, instead hinting around at the problem(s) and making us think about it to solve it for ourselves. Same thing every time I ask you something field related.

For this one, it might be something as simple as the size of my cages, which could stand to be bigger IMO.
