My best Guyana BCC litter yet

kitchi Aug 26, 2008 04:51 PM

All keepers - high contrast, uniform peaked saddled. Too bad they were all lifless. I spent all last Sat. cleaning up and throwing away premium dead BCC. My best Suriname also premied out just hours before the Guyana. I guess I should not have opened the window and let the humidity in Sat morning LOL. Who knows what triggers this off. The other bad news is that this bloodline will not be reproduced 100% in the future since I recently sold the two male brother breeders that produced these.

Here are pics of both the Guyana and Suriname females that premied.

Who knows Mike?

That is what makes B.C.C. such a challenge and also such a spectacular endeavor for all of us that love them.

However, with your recent luck it may be one or two major things that contributed to this years not going too good?

Temperature? Over feeding? Only you can look at what is going on in front of you.

Heck, I had Peruvians breeding like WildFire this Season and they all blew up, but none look to be gravid and are eating.

The Mysteries, are definately part of the intrigue!

Well, I do not think it was over feeding because this was the same girl that had the 18 healhy baby litter last year and I barely got her weight back on. It could have been too much stress and it was against my better judgement to breed her two years in a row. That does not apply to the 03' Suri as it was her first breeding. She was not very big but should have been big enough. The other thing I did this year was use heat pads like everyone else seems to use. They both thermoregulated at aprox. 87F per my temp gun. All my pevious BCC litters were produced with only electric oil filled room heaters on the snake room floor. I should have stuck with my sucessful method as these were not the caliber of animals to experiment on.

Something to be said about; " If it is not broke, do not fix it. "

I had heard something about you using no supplemental heat in the past and it obviously worked for you.

However, sometimes " we need to break out of the box, even at the risk of not getting good results " and I commend you greatly for that.

B.C.C. definately take a great amount of patience and love and I hope to take what I have learned over the years and apply it to successful breedings.

However, I do not kid myself at all when it comes to success itself.

I do not know Mike; " Maybe in the end it is all about genetics. "

Maybe, just maybe we keep way too many Boas in litters that would have never made it in the wild and they wind up living through our nurturing, but never become great producers, even when subjected to the same breedings and cycling that others in the group experiance and have success? "

Not mentioning any names, but one of the best B.C.C. producers I know, let me in on a secret one time " maybe by mistake " and mentioned that he will give a female two seasons to prove herself and if she does not, she gets sent down the road.

In essence, " as far as my understanding was concerned based on his comments, " he only kept productive females.

So, maybe " wether he does it intentionally knowing his reasons or not " he is simply weeding out the ones that were never meant to be successful if they would have been born in nature? "

It would not seem in your case that this would probably apply.

The girls just simply dropped premies, but there were fully developed and shows the act itself was done properly.

Maybe just means; " you will be breaking out the oil heaters again! "

Thanks, for letting me Ramble and The Best Of Luck toward whatever else you are expecting to drop.......John J

I am so blown out by this. I feel like I got kicked in the gut. Those things were simply unbelievable.. They looked ready to go. That really sucks.

Ahhh!! what a let down Mike, I guess nothing with the B.c.c is automatic. it would be interesting to identify what the cause was for the two to drop early, or maybe just a coincidence. Sorry to see that happen they were all very nice looking.

I am SO sorry to hear that Mike.
However, as a hobbyist it's good to see the down side so that expectations don't get out of whack. If you don't mind sharing, how many days after POS did the females deliver?

I've got my fingers crossed that my female doesn't do the same thing. I've got approximately 8 days to wait...

JB, the Suri would have been at day 126 PO and 110 POS on 8/31 but she had them 8/23. I did not keep track of the Guyana.

okeeteekid Aug 26, 2008 06:07 PM

sorry for your loss mike, they were very nice looking too, that sucks.

Man that sucks. Sorry to hear about all the premies. That has to hurt even more than my gravid female that died this season

Were those in the sack, or not? They look fully formed.
I've had fully formed dead delivered when they weren't birthed quickly enough. They were out of the sack. Big slug blocked them.
Yeah. My snakes' breeding was a bust too when I got away from oil filled room heaters. Sometimes less is more.
Sorry for your loss.
