Albino Hondurans

chuckster Aug 26, 2008 05:36 PM

Don't mean to rattle any cages, but I have a few questions to ask about the albino honduran. When the first albino was produced years ago,it made the cover of Reptiles Magazine.I noticed it a broken noseband.Kind of like the polyzona.Through the years with albinos you no longer see that.I'm not saying it isn't pure.Just want to know if anyone would like to shed some light on it.Thanks Chuck

There's a lot of debate and confusion over the lineage of those animals. There's actually some current debate over the validity of the subspecies hondurensis - some researchers claim them (and the other Pacific Central American triangulum) to be polyzona. You're correct in noting the broken snout band as a diagonstic feature of polyzona, but it also shows up in wild hondurensis. Porras and Barczyk claim to have settled the issue and that the original animals labled as polyzona in Europe were hatched from a clutch of hondurensis.
