unusually active

snailqueen87 Aug 26, 2008 09:15 PM

My snake usually spends all her time during the day in her favourite hide but the last week or two she has spent just about all of her time roaming her tank.
During the day she climbs about on the log etc and at night I can hear her pushing at the lid (which now has a 500 page genetics textbook weighing it down!) and burrowing in the substrate.
Temperatures haven't changed and are as recommended in Kathy Loves book. I thought she was maybe hungry but resumed this activity a few days after being fed.

Any suggestions?

For one, make sure your tank's lid has very secure latches. A textbook doesn't help if you accidentally forget to put it back on there one day.

Are you certain your snake is a female? Her "activeness" sounds an awful lot like my boy who is sporadically eating lately. I forgot to tell Doug about how he climbs all over and pushes at the lid. Maybe they're both looking for females..

I'll be mighty impressed if she manages to push this one off, but yeah, I still have a certain amount of fear!
I had 'her' probbed about 2 years back by the reptile shop I bought her in and they reckoned on female but the tail does have some male-ish qualities (it seems to taper slowly after the vent but then I'm the first to admit I'm still learning!)
If she is infact male I guess that would explain it but otherwise.....?

Females also become extremely active before laying a clutch, and they sometimes lay a clutch without a mating.

Can you take a picture of her?

It's been a while since I put photos here so this may not work, fingers crossed!

If this doesn't work can anyone tell me how to do it properly?

Doesn't look gravid to me.
It's not always accurate, but from the tail, I would guess female. It's not the best angle - but male corns typically have tales that are much longer than that.

Wasn't sure of the best angle to take the picture at, and she's not the most cooperative! As soon as you set her down she seems to think 'Freedom??....leg it!' but I suppose it would be slither it lol.

Thanks for the input, I'm not concerned, just curious. And slightly miffed at her keeping me awake at night with all her ventures! (given that its now 2am and I'm still awake and listening to her!) :s
