Nice pics!,.....all those "mugs" were a very familiar sight, and I enjoyed talking to all you guys there. It always seems the show is never long enough, and is over before you know it!

I wish I would have taken more pics,...I always get so darn caught up in talking to friends and looking at stuff!..LOL!

best regards, ~Doug

Thomas,...Yeah,.. I was at the Hilton Saturday night, and saw you guys walk through the lobby from far away, but the girlfriends we were with didn't care too much about all the "snake talk",but we still ran into a fair amount of friends and "chewed the fat" about snakes nonetheless. The fireworks and "Slingshot" ride were cool to see too!. I enjoyed the night enough to have had a bit of a hangover as well the next day..hahaha!

Yes, as you said, there will be more Daytona's!..LOL!

later man!, ~Doug

I'm sorry I missed it and couldn't meet all you guys. Looks like it was fun. I've only been to Daytona once, and that was during the hurricane show in 2004. Nice Newport-Long Beach snake you posted. That's a very clean "typical" pattern for those. Is it pure, or the result of many generations of cross breeding? Here's one of mine-wild caught in L.A.

thomas davis Aug 27, 2008 01:44 PM

yep ya missed out.
the cal is a reult of many generations of captive breedings it is pure getula, the parents throw quite the array of pattern/types heres a typical clutch from them...

I knew it was pure getula (at least, I suspected it) but just wondered if it was a "pure" Newporter. From the pic of the siblings it's now obvious it isn't, but it IS related. Cool snakes, BTW.

One thing that many do not understand is that there is a difference between striped patterns of California kings. There are 5 basic striped pattern types that live within their own ranges:
San Diego
Newport-Long Beach
Nitida
Eiseni
and
Delta (Davis)

All of those have sub-morphs (or just "morphs" that occur in the wild and are either typical or aberrant. The San Diego pattern has the most variation of all 5.

Your snakes are derived from interbreeding of the Newport and San Diego patterns. This was done a long time ago, and has resulted in things like Banana kings, Reverse stripe kings, etc. etc. The Newport characteristics are blotches (not specks) on the sides and a dark-topped tail.

I'm mostly interested in what occurs naturally in the wild, but I can still appreciate the interesting morphs you guys create in captivity.

Very Cool, Tom. Looks like you guys had a great timte. The pics were cool, cuz you put faces to names & nicnames. That's a great little Cal King too. History behindit?
