Brooks breeding question

54podge Aug 27, 2008 03:33 PM

OK, so I have decided against hybrids simply because I think you cannot improve upon the Brooks/floridana/whatever else they have been called. Also, I have seen some beautiful examples of these animals on this forum. My question is: based on the pic below, which is a Brooks I bought in Daytona 2 yrs ago that was labeled as a "High-orange Apalachicola King", what Brooks would produce some interesting offspring? I am killing myself for passing on an albino female a month ago, but am interested in breeding my male next year.

Thanks

Thats a nice Brooks. I would breed it to normal or normal het that looks as light as it does.

Just search for a high yellow phase. It does not matter if it is het for anything of not. Just pair it up with something equally as nice or nicer.

Maybe Dmong can post a pic of that high yellow one he got from me last year. Thats is what i would breed it to.

You know - Rana draytonii use to be Rana aurora draytonii because they look extremely similar to Rana aurora (what use to be Rana aurora aurora) it turns out that Rana aurora is closer to Rana cascadae than it is to Rana draytonii.

Thanks! What do you think about the albino idea?

you mean crossing with a lavender albino? That has been done to death. IMO that snake will have more value if bred to a similar high yellow phase (normal). With the hypos and lavs we have seen everything and inbetween . I think making similar normals of what you have (yes I think it is that nice looking) would be the best ticket to sell the offspring.

Here's the Important question.

What "Look" are you trying to achieve....

Are you looking for a Morph (Hypo, Axan, Lav, PB, Amel t-)

Or really nice HIGH-color Normals?

I'm a Morph head... i think that animal bred to a killer hypo would throw some nice stuff. bred to a lavender the adults should look really nice but it takes some time for the colors on lavender specimen to "come through".

i think you need to set your personal goal (what "look" you what to produce), then find a suitable mate.

Lav?

Hypo?

Killer Normal?

All up to what you like and what you think you'd be able to sell.

I have waffled between colorful snakes and the lavender ones. I have to say that I am leaning heavily towards the lavender. They are just too awesome!

nice looking Fl king that appears not to have Goini influence but if it was labeled leaves me leary ,as far as going to an albino ,the true albino T- is rarely avail but a good choice..more commonly avail is the T "Lav" and these are readilly avail......C

Do you remember the vender you bought from? 2-3 years ago i aquired Orange brooks at Daytona that were produced from a reputible breeder and are sought after since he went the BOA route and no longer has them Chris

That looks like Bill Schmeidecke's "hi-orange" FL kings.
I bet it is. Hell, you could have gotten one from me for all I know!
Anyway, there's probably NO Apalachicola king in that snake.

That is the name that has been mentioned to me from the descriptions I gave of location and personell. Unfortunately, it was my very first show and I was kinda dumbstruck!
