general tortoise question

miggs Aug 27, 2008 07:39 PM

I have had experiences with tortoises over the years and recently lost one that I have had for a long time. I am now considering a redfoot baby. I have worked with them previously but am concerned because I live in upstate NY therefore the tortoise would live inside more than half the year. Is this unfair? Unfortunately, we all can't live in the warmer climates! Would appreciate some advice. Thanks.

Hi, I live in CT and keep 2 redfoots. One I have had since a hatchling in 2000. I am only able to get her outside during the day maybe 30-50 days a year at the absolute MOST. I hope its not unfair to her. She has a pretty large indoor enclosure with a misting system. I recommend a misting system here in the North otherwise you will be going crazy misting all the time by hand.

One day I hope to move south where they can be outside a much larger amount of time!

Carole
