Daytona Acquisitions...

CSRAJim Aug 28, 2008 03:50 PM

All,

Daytona 2008 was great fun despite the blinding rain on the way down there...It was good to meet some new folks that also took the venture to go down there and see it as well and swap herp stories with old friends...I'm looking forward to next year.

Aubrey, what did you eventually take home with you? Craig, post the photos of your acquisitions as well...

These three girls struck my fancy and told me to take them home...So I said yes mam to all three of them and took them home with me...

Later,
Jim.

PS: For those folks that went down there, post some of your Daytona photos and/or acquisitions...

Maria,

Thanks, over the years of working with the thayeri the double split bands have become my favorite pattern design. On some individual scales, you can three or more pattern colors evident on a single scale! Man, I love this job! I first read about them in Hobart Smith's 1944 paper (Hoogstraal Expedition) and I find this to be an exquisite pattern that was documented in-situ some 64 years now (minscule in the overall timeline of their genetics) and can still be found today in captivity.

It remains as to how this pattern can be replicated in captivity but, I'm going to work with it in my collection. I'm curious about the possibilities over time as to whether or not the "key hole" pattern is a derivative from this pattern or is it somehting entirely different on its own...We'll see how things turn out...

I'm in deep appreciation for the yoeman's work that Bob Hansen has done with his resources as I doubt I would have known about it for many years without his work there...Many thanks Bob and to the other old timers out there that documented this exquisite pattern...

I'm certainly looking forward to the future with my box of thayeri eggs! Ha! Ha!

Later,
Jim.

PS: Here's another one (male) from pikiemikie...

Jim,

I also wonder if the "thin-banded" thayeri are just a natural extension of the split-bands. Not so hard to imagine, especially looking at the beauty you just posted.

That one is enough to get you addicted....Nice split bands. I remember some of us calling them 'ghost','keyholed' or 'hallow' saddles a few years back.

That one reminds me of these two little one back in 2004 and 2005....

Actually the first one I produced from a male I got from David at Mt. Kings. He got the male from Evan Stahl.

I got the last one in 2005 in Daytona from Mitch Allen. Looks kinda Anery with the hollow saddles, but I could see some reds in there in person. Just very reduced pigmentation IMHO....
I wonder what ever happened to David and the 'anery' thayeri.

Adam,

No, I acquired all three of them from Tim T (along with another female-2006 and a male-2007). From what I've learned so far, their provenance comes from Sipperly & Howell via Zuchowski way back when...This is preliminary provenance and I've still got some background work to do but this is what I know so far...

John,

Thanks man but I was already "addicted" before I first started seeing this double-split bands...Ha! Ha!

Those are some nice specimens in these photos...I've seen that same head pattern (in the first two photos) on one of mine that has provenance back to Rick M...It looks like a "butterfly" to me...

In any case, very nice animals...

Maria,

This girl started my quest back in 2006...I acquired her at the 2006 Daytona show from the same gentleman that I acquired my 2008 girls from. Now when you consider that Pikiemikie is producing a similar pattern, you can understand my initial interest but, when I read Hobart's work...That cinched it for me!

Not only an exquisite pattern to me but a documented one from the old days...

Later,
Jim.

PS: Check out the body photo below...Some scales carry three pattern colors...What a genetic wonder in my humble opinion...

Todd,

Ha! Ha! Thanks man...I'll have to ask her what she's got going on on the side...I knew I shouldn't have let her talk me into letting her keep her cell phone. Alright, she's grounded now and the cell phone is toast! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Later,
Jim.

PS: I'd better check her "My Space" account as well...

Jim,

All are beautiful...just like I told you in person. I will post mine when I get them all eating. 5 of the 7 took F/T pinks straight away. Now I have to dance with the other two.

Ah yes...That dance that keeper's have to perform for that fleeting moment of joy when they chow down until the next time...

Looking forward to seeing your photos...

Later,
Jim.

PS: Good to see you again down there...

Man, you're breaking my heart. Love the black highlights on those snakes. My weakness. I don't blame you, I would have taken them home too.

Joe Forks Aug 29, 2008 04:00 PM

Jim,
You know I'm envious. There is no question in my mind that those are classic leonis and that particular pattern is derived directly from south to NNW migration of mexicana mexicana, even the trifoliate head markings sometimes seen in leonis.

I'm out for a couple days. I'll catch up on e-mail when I return.

It was great finally getting to meet you, Jim! Those babies are nice. I brought a few things home, but no Thayeri. Since you asked, I'll post pictures of the show and what I brought home in separate threads.

So, if she weighs the same as a duck, then she's made of wood.

and therefore.......

Yep, me too.. I got DVD as soon as it was available Btw, when I was in London a month ago, there was some big theatre near to Piccadely Circus, where was some Holy grail quest play based on this movie running for weeks.. and based on what I have heard it was very fun and successful.. It's pity I could not see that..

Where is it? I cannot see it!
There!
Where, behind the rabbit?
It's that rabbit!

No to be completly of the topic.. here is photo of Pastel King which I brought from UK at that very the same time..
