88 Days later, I hatch my nicest Hypo

antr1 Aug 29, 2008 07:15 AM

This clutch was laid on 6/1 and they just began coming out of their eggs last night. This one is the nicest Hypo I have hatched. I was hoping for an extreme, but I still have a few more clutches so maybe I will get lucky with them.

Thanks, by the way here is that pair of Thayeri I got from you last year. They are doing great- the female is now about tripple in size- she can't eat enough.

Well worth the wait I'd say!, Those are great looking!

Since I always like comparing notes on collective results,...what temps were you keeping those at?

thanks!, ~Doug

I was just using normal room temps. I think from 73 to 82. I have them in the incubator but I do not have it turned on. I noticed since doing this the babies come out bigger.

Yes, I've also been using slightly cooler temps of approx. 78 or so, and I also think it gives the neonates more time to fully absorb the yolk, thus making them a little more robust than they might otherwise be. Also on the slight off-chance more females might be produced as well, along with fewer deformities being likely.

Thanks for the input!

I will agree with except that this year I am very high on males so the theory of cooler temps will get you more females did not work for me this year at all. But I did the same last year and and I had a balance somewhat on the sexes. Go figure!!!

Doug,

I kept the eggs between 74 and 76 degrees. I did the same thing last year and out of 5 clutches one was 50/50 male to female and the others all had more females then males. I know it is not a scientific study, but since it worked I will keep doing it untill I end up with a male heavy clutch.

The down side is that my stuff is just hatching and I will be waiting until October-December for some second clutches.

Really nice hypos. All of those are great.

Interesting note on the temps and sex ratios with Hondos. Last year, I incubated between 79 and 81 degrees and I had a clutch of 12 hypos hatch out as one male and 11 females (I probed the whole clutch twice because I didn't think it was probable). But I also had a clutch of four albinos hatch out all male. I think the average at the end of the year ended up slightly heavy female side but not by much.
