R.I. question

cornball252 Aug 29, 2008 01:46 PM

ok so i bought this supposed Male pastel at daytona.
Ends up being a female at $160.
so i got her home set her up let her hang out for a day.
Went in to check up on her took her out and noticed somw wheezing. not heavy but like a whistle. and i thought nothing of it. then the following day i took her out a gain to check up and make sure she wasnt "whistling" and she was. so i check her gums. (she hates it) a little white not much pink. so i set her in her cage keep that heat on.

Now i was wondering a few things.
how much would a visit to the vet run for, for an R.I.
Is it good to take them in the bathroom while showering to have that humidity?
could it be just a cold?
Im tight on money, moving next friday out of state, and in need of a vet.
Estimate on the Cost.

Thanks
Ben

I'm sure it would vary from vet to vet, and probably in diffrent parts of the country. I took 3 bst's to a vet to check for RI. Only 2 concerned me but wanted to check the one in the next cage over while I was at it. He said lungs sounded fine but 2 had infections in thier nasal cavities, gave me 10 syringes of baytril and charged me $30.50. If you are near St. Louis let me know, I can give you his office# and address.

no im in FL moving up to NC. thanks though.
And as far as Baytril. It works god ive heard bad things about both drugs, bay, and amk,

Like the other poster said, it varies depending on area. Here in New England it's pretty pricey to get a good herp vet. At the clinic where I work it's $55.50 just for the visit, additional depending on what is done or if they send home meds.

I suggest just calling your vet and ask what would the minimum charge be to check your snake for an Upper respiratory infection and typical cost of treatment if she does have one.

Most are willing to give estimates.

Hey Ben,
The reason I asked is that I dose my own animals with Baytril when needed for URIs. You said you are moving north and I thought you might be close enough to bring your snake here for us to assess..but I am in the Tallahassee area and NOT close to you. Do you belong to a herp society or know others who keep reptiles? You might want to inquire of others you know in the hobby....they may be knowledeable in antibiotic therapy.

Good Luck and I hope the animal improves for you soon.

Thanks Susan!
Yea i know that its 5 mg of baytril for every one kilo. my trouble is how to get baytril with out a vet.... i know how to give the shots or oral meds... and the hydration therapy.
I can pretty much take care of any sickness if i have the meds...
But i gotta make sure its a URI before any further action.
I have a friend who has a vet up in NC i think.

Thanks for the offer!

I have had vet visits run anywhere from $15 to $50 depending on the vet, so I would call around. The RI I treated cost $20 total for the vet visit and all Baytril shots. I heard that raising temps a little bit can help a RI but I never waited to see if that's true.

Some of my snakes wheeze a little after shedding but it goes away within a couple days, if it happens.
