blizzard vs. leucistic??

trex8692 Aug 29, 2008 04:52 PM

I always thought they were the same type of morph, but id like to know a little more history on them, as in why one name became more common than the other and who started it, etc.

That is IF they are the same morph..

The reason i asked this is because my first leo was purchased as a baby from www.lllreptile.com and it was labeled as a Baby Leucistic Leopard Gecko but i see other animals labeled as Blizzard (including blazings). I later did some more research online and i found out that leucistic was a junior name for blizzard and was later changed. Why is that?

Check out this link to the store site (have to hurry because the animals might get sold out): http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/animals/leopard-geckos/

And what does leucistic/blizzard mean?

Are they?

If they are then my little animal i bought from lllreptile is indeed a leucistic/blizzard right?

If you cannot tell it is patternless with a faint yellow coloring and a blue skull top.

What I can tell you is Leucistics & Blizzards are sepeate morphs. In 1991 when the first Murphy Patternless were produced they were improperly labled "Leucistics" in the Leo trade. Then in 1995 when the Blizzards were first produced & more resembled what a Leucistic animal should look like the Leucistics were properly relabled Murphy Patternless(aka Patternless). Unfortunatly, some dealers haven't conformed to this relabling & have created alot of confusion.
With that said, I recently looked at LLL's Leo list & what they had picured as "Leucistic" looks actually like Blizzards to me. Considiring the sorce & no offence to LLL, but they are not experts when it comes to Leo morphs. So I can't say for sure what your Leo is.
In a nutshell the, the term "Leucistic" shouldn't be used until a truely genetic Leucistic mutation appears in the future.
Now the Blazing Blizzard is a combo of the Blizzard & Albino. There are also combos of Patternless & Albino as well.
Hope this clears up a lttle of the confusion for you.
