Can't get used to that bite!

petie11o5 Aug 29, 2008 06:10 PM

So I went to get my female BRB out today and she is still little, so she is nippy. She struck at me and has a few other times, even though I am very gentle and I move slow when I get her out. I just can't get used to her flinging at me! Its almost funny because I freak out everytime! Anyone else like that lol?

I can relate but do yourself and her a favor and don't react. If you have to use a glove until you are comfortable but don't react to her aggression. It just reinforces the behavior in her. If you just pick her up without any hesitation or flinching then she will quickly grow out of the nippiness. I also would not go slow when reaching for her because it just gives her more time to decide to bite and it might even freak her out more then a normal speed reach because it may look like your hand is stalking her.

The sooner she aclimates to your picking her up the sooner you do not have to worry about bites and the sooner her stress level will go down because she won't be on the defensive constantly.

Sean.

Glad I could help. Also if you keep having trouble let us know as there are various tricks that can also be used but from your description it sounds like just getting her used to the fact that biting has no effect will be enough.

Sean, I have let it bite me and it has actually drawn blood from me in the past. Should I keep trying to tame her and let you know how things are going in the future ? Or is there anything else you would recommend?

This is biting season. Some litters are born striking at anything that moves. Of the 54 babies born here in the last month I think they have all bitten me at least a few times. Some times they draw a little blood. If they want to hang on and chew I let them. It is no big deal. The bite of a little BRB is about the same as a scratch from a kitten. I try to not flinch when they strike or bite. I never back away from one that is striking. To back away or leave it alone when it is striking just reinforces the striking behaviour. If one is striking inside it's cage I make a point to get it out and handle it. The more times it is exposed to someone who does not leave it alone when it strikes the sooner it learns that striking does not make the big bad human go away. I try to handle them every day and they begin to get the idea fairly quickly. Most are fully tame within a month.

Wear a leather glove and let her bite you as much as she wants; you won't feel the bites so it will be easy to just handle her normally. She'll see that biting achieves nothing and she has nothing to fear and eventually quit doing it.

I was going to say the same thing!! I use a leather glove for the little ones and the really nasty ones. I used to flinch like you... not anymore! If you have the glove on, you don't even feel a thing and you can just leave your hand in there and let her bite to her little heart's content. She'll mellow out! As long as she doesn't learn that biting will make you go away!

the brbs still dont nail me, but my pair of superdwarf retics, are pyscho, want to draw blood, and seem to enjoy pissing on me at the same time im holding them. Its like they hold it all in, wanting till the day im going to get them out. Now im not worried about the bites, but they do seem to have some kind of intelligence that i have not seen in a snake before, they seem to look at me, and decide just how they going to get me today

That's scary! I wouldn't put it past your retics to hold urine as a "gift" for you! I think snakes are smarter than most people think---and retics have a reputation for nastiness.

I think my corn snakes do the reverse---hold it in as a kindness (don't dump on the hand that feeds you!) because they have NEVER defecated on me no matter how long I've held them, but often as soon as I put them back in their tank, they'll go. (They don't even relieve themselves on me when I have them at the Ren Fest for 10 hours, but they'll defecate in their tub on the way home---and then sleep straight through for three days afterwards!)

My first Python at age 11, I worked in a pet store and had ordered it for myself, 40 bucks in the early 80's. First thing the little guy did when I took him out of the sack was piss all over me and bite and constrict my hand. I WAS IN LOVE!!! LOL!!

I have been bit by some good sized retics, one 16 foot female laid a hurtin on my arm several years back.

They are my favorite Python specie.

I remember at 11 being all excited it was going to get 30 feet long.

He topped out at aout 14 feet and fathered 96 hatchlings in 1995.

He is deceased now, he got killed by a 25 foot female, same one he sired those babies with. I was very sad, even cried

Yours is a cutie as it is munching' on your arm and clothes.

Once they get accustomed to you they are as tractable as any Burmese.

No my parents never helped me care for any of my snakes and they stayed out of my room as well.

I assume once she became gravid she got very pissy with his advances and swatted him just right and didn't kill him just broke his spine and he had to be put down.

She was over 25 feet long and she just died a few years ago at age 30.

In her lifetime she also killed a fairly large African rock python that was being housed with her.

He looked like a needle on top of a haystack when they where copulating. It was freakish like she hit him just right into the wooden enclosure they where mating in I guess.

That's too bad, Frank! Was she difficult for people to handle or just short-tempered with other snakes? Also, did you own her for most of her lifetime, or did you get her as an adult?

She was tame towards people, she wasn't mine, she was someone I have known since I worked in the pet store. His family owned the pet store and he was the reason I got mine, we had no intention on breeding them in the future. When I got mine his was already 16-18 foot already. In the mid 90 he was looking for someone who had a male to try and breed then and I happen to have one and in 1995 we bred them and where successful. There was no kingsnake.com or shows or anything around and I knew of no one but two people who kept retics in 1980/82.

We both got for the sake of getting them, never even dreamed we would someday bred them over a decade later.

From the retic pairing that was successful in the 90's, I mean.
I know you got rid of all your giant snakes awhile back and have no retics right now.

I kept several but during my divorce in 1997 I had to get rid of all my snakes. In 2000 I got a few from those babies babies. I actually have one retic right now that I am keeping. It is from my snakes son bred to an ambon yellow head. One of the ones I gave away to a friend had injured her mouth pretty bad I took her back and nursed it back to normal, well she's staying with me here. So I lasted a little while with zero retic's.

In the mid 90 he was looking for someone who had a male to try and breed then and I happen to have one and in 1995 we bred them and where successful. There was no kingsnake.com or shows or anything around and I knew of no one but two people who kept retics in 1980/82.

Frank, so what's the oldest and longest retic you've seen kept in captivity? Was the 30-year-old, 25-foot female the biggest you've dealt with? (I'm wondering how big your current gal is likely to get... )

I really do like the look of retics but my husband is firmly against me getting any large snakes. (The blood python was the closest to "big" I could get and I'm thrilled to be getting her....if she ever arrives!)

The longest I ever had a retic was about 14 years and he was 14 foot. I had a 17 foot tiger retic for 6 years, but he was like 12 foot when I got him. That old female was a friend of mine and that was the biggest I have ever seen in person and ever worked with. The current one probably will not get past 16 foot like her mother. Time will tell, she just messed her mouth up striking the glass and sides while I was feeding her, have to find a better way to approach her as she goes into a wild feeding mode and hits grabs everything in sight sometimes hurting her mouth or folding her teeth under her jaw. Poor snake. She is ok though.
