MBK or Black Milk

FloridaHogs Aug 29, 2008 08:55 PM

Got this beauty off of craigs list. Short story military guy gets shipped overseas and gives it to a friend who gives it to me. All they said was a black kingsnake, but I am not 100% on that. He is 665g 52.8 inches (4.4ft) Sweet and laidback. He has a little bit of yellow flecking on the edges of his belly. Also, he is in blue.

That's a good sized Mexican Black King(L.g.nigrita). MBK's have a dark skin between the scales, and a somewhat duller to even brownish tint to their black.

Black Milksnake's have a whitish to a golden colored skin between the scales, are glossier black, and have 19 scale rows at mid-body. Black Milks also usually have a light colored throat as well.

When seen side by side, the difference in color is quite obvious. Yours is a MBK because it is brown, not glossy black.

Here's a photo comparison of the body color of the two taxa (MBK on top, gaigeae on bottom) -
