Breeding without brumation

mfoux Aug 30, 2008 12:29 AM

At the risk of opening a can of worms...

For those of you who breed your Hondos or other milks without brumation, when do you start introducing the male? I have a female that just hit a growth spurt and jumped from 350g to over 500g in about two months. I've introduced the male a few times and he's all over her, but she doesn't seem interested. Should I keep at it? I was hoping for a late season clutch. Or should I just wait and cool her this winter with the others?

I guess it can't hurt to try. did you see the female ovulate? My guess is no and that's why she doesn't seem interested. My bet is you'll have better luck next season after a brumation period.

Thanks Dave. No ovulation yet, as far as I can tell. She should be a monster by the time I start cooling her! She was around 300 grams/36 inches at the beginning of the summer and is well over 500g now at 48 inches.

BTW, the apricot pueblan female I got from you a couple years ago should be back in the saddle next year. I've got a male hypo that I'm raising to go with her.
