Broken back or new morph

danne_k Aug 31, 2008 04:39 AM

I got this baby from breeding a par of het for albino. I got 16 eggs, 4 of them where albino, 11 normal looking and this one. His back was bendth and he could not straigthen it out but the rest worked like it should. So what do you think off this? is it a new morph but unluckely with a broken back or is the white spot there becouse of the broken back ??

Poor little guy! And he's so darling!

I'm taking a guess at this as I've never bred any kind of snakes. But I'm guessing it's a birth defect of the general area and not much there developed properly. I'm also going to guess he's not going to be able to pass food properly.

Looks like at one point development in that area just shut completely down.

But, again, this is just speculation on my part and those that are more in the know will most likely chime in here and give you better information based on experience.

I wish you luck. What a sweetie!

Looks like a ringer (ball python terms for this) not a pied. The only way to see would breed him back to mom and sibling females. I don't know if it will be possible with the way he looks so your second option would be to keep all the siblings and start a new project. Good luck with it.

It seems like your incubator may have been to hot or the possibilty of a heat strike has happened to the egg.

Sometimes when the eggs are incubated are at a high temp, you can get abberant marking occur on the offspring but it comes with the risk of kinking.

I had the same thing happen to one of my sand boas and it looked just like that and its back was broke also. So i would have to say after seeing your its just a birth defect.

In my opinion it is a birth defect; but, in case it is genetic I would hold back all sibling and the mother, and try to reproduce the trait, which appears piebald to me. That's my opinion.

Good Luck,

there was a guy on the boa classifieds selling a boa with the same birth defect and same ringer pieblad pattern right at the point of the crease or defect. Although the kink wasn't as dramatic as yours, it appeared to be the same defect with the only real difference being that boas are born alive. Best of luck to you. I'd lean towards it being a BD.
