My male, Hydra, is currently in a long 30 gal but someone just gave me what I think is a 55 gal (48x13x21) so of course I couldn't turn it down. Would that be better for him? Or is that a little overkill for a snake under 4 feet?

I'd say go for it. Then make room for another snake in the 30 gallon.
