If it lays eggs, it's female.
If it copulated with one that laid eggs - it's male.

Reason I ask is when buying a young snake how can assure myself to get a male or a female. I know you can "pop" corn snakes when they are young but can to do the same to a young bull snake?

Pituophis are pretty easy to pop, perhaps not quite as easy as Corns, but not tough at all. Best of luck.

Popping is great for SEX determination. As far as GENDER, you'll have to wait to see if it behaves like a male or a female......lol.
